New key prices?

What have you guys paid recently to get new keys made at the dealer? I need keys made for my Sportline and the shell my 190D is getting transferred into, but don't want to have a locksmith make them with cheapo brass blanks. When I went to the dealer today, I was told they wanted $75 per key. Seems like a bit much for a basic key.

I bought a key a few months ago for my 400E and I think it was in the $30 range.

FYI it seems that there are new rules about getting keys made that involve you physically bringing the car in.

I bought a valet key for $35. Originally, they just made me a spare. I told them I didn't need to go to a dealer for a duplicate. Then they claimed they didn't know what a valet key was. Apparently, it is a secondary key in current Mercedesspeak.

Crap....I was going to order new keys from the dealer as well, and my dealership is 350 miles away.... You have to bring the car in? Ludicrous.

According my parts guy, that write up is a little misleading.

Mercedes changed the rules (again) in the part couple of weeks and in SOME cases you do have to bring the car in. That is for cars with the fobs/laser keys/infrared keys, whatever you want to call it, like my E55. The dealer must produce a printout from the cars ECU to send back to Mercedes showing what key was added to the cars ECU, and if a key was lost, they must document they have deactivated that key. They charge 1hr of labor to do it, so around $120 to get it done.

He told me I could order a key like normal for my older cars, pay up front, fill out associated paperwork, when the key comes in now you have to pick it up and sign for it. Someone other than who ordered it cannot pick it up. But that rule is a few months old at this point. As they aren't recognized by any computer he can just hand them to you.

I have not tried to buy an ignition lately, but when I ordered a keyed door handle for the 280SL there was nothing service had to do.

Mercedes keys are cheap usually, had keys made for the 190SL for $5.90 and all 3 for the 280SL for around $40.

W201 keys are definitely more than W124 keys but I want to say I was paying like $18 for 124 keys and $24 for W201.

The dealer needs your current registration and drivers license with matching addresses.
MB of Hunsville quoted me $15 a key a couple years ago.

Maybe it helped that I have bought parts from the dealer in the past, IDK.

I do know the first time I bought a key for the 85 300D, I went in, showed the Registration and Drivers license.
The last time I bought a key for the 240 I Faxed in the Reg and Lic. and I think they mailed me the key.

I don`t remember them coming out to see the car.
Maybe they just wanted the old junkers off their lot quickly as possible. LOL.

I'm going to call around to the other nearby dealers and even the one I went to so I can get an accurate price. I sorta wonder if the guy at the parts counter said $75 to get rid of me. I may call down to MB of Gainsville, FL since I'll probably also be down there in the next couple of months but hopefully at least one of the 5 Atlanta area dealers will be more reasonable.

This they aren't allowed to do anymore. I used to just fax them in and then only drive to the dealer to pick it up, but they can't do it anymore. I suppose anyone can do anything, but the new "rules" are that they cannot.

I used to pick up my dads keys and they won't let me do that anymore either. It has to be picked up by the person who is on the paperwork and registration.

My dealer just wanted some kind of proof of ownership. A current copy of my insurance card, which has the VIN, was sufficient. Give them a call, I'm sure they will work with you.

After all, just because you drove the vehicle in, isn't proof of ownership.

With regard to the OP, IIRC, I believe they call a 800# with the VIN to order the key.

I had a new key made while I was getting an alignment. Only $20 and they just needed the registration and a drivers license.
