Ah, no. That explains it. Adding it to the hydraulic fluid reservoir under the hood is not correct.

The additive goes inside the differential, via the fill plug on the side.

I would definitely recommend flushing your now contaminated hydraulic fluid, I have no idea if the additive in that fluid is good or bad.

If you haven't yet changed the differential fluid, or at least checked to make sure it is full, now would be a good time to drain that and fill with fresh at the same time that you put in the additive.

I don't think there's any contamination since the reservoir called for the specific fluid that I topped it off with. This reservoir has a hose on the bottom that feeds fluid into the power steering pump. This must be for hydraulic suspension. I was told that that was where to add fluid for the ASD. Does the differential use ZHM as the additive for ASD, along with the differential lube?

OK, then I go back to my original recommendation. Order a bottle of this from the dealer: A 000 989 82 03. It should come in a 30ml bottle. It goes directly into the differential via the fill plug hole on the side.

The pictured reservoir / fluid / dual circuit power steering pump were used for both the ASD and the self-leveling rear suspension.

Sorry to be so ignorant BUT how much additive should be put in the differential compared to regular gear oil?

Not Good!

Called the dealer to order the additive. I gave them the part number that Maxbumpo supplied and the parts man said that the number comes up but the additive is no longer available.

Any alternatives?

Parts guy should be able to find the current part number. I know that thethe EPC willwill list original and all superseding parts for "hard" parts.

The bottle is really small, just 30 mm. Maybe remove a small amount ofof lube from the diff, dump in the little bottle, install plug and away you go.

The Results are In!

After much searching for the additive to go into the differential I came up empty handed. The helpful parts guys at NAPA did his best to help me find an alternative to the fluid I was looking for. He was stumped. Me too! He gave me the number of a European Auto Repair Shop a few miles away and said if anybody could get this figured out then "Charlie" could. So, I called Charlie. He was very familiar with the ASD system on these cars and immediately told me that no additive was needed for the oil in the differential. C'mon now Charlie, are you sure? He said that the differential oil and the ASD hydraulic fluid were separate and should be kept that way. I asked repeatedly about an additive but he told me that it is not called for. He also, as others here have, recommended that I drain the old oil from the differential and put in fresh 75w-90w fully synthetic gear oil in there. He said that I should make sure that the reservoir under the hood on the left side was filled with the correct level of ZHM Hydraulic Fluid. Guess what? That's the fluid that I already have. I did what he told me to do and the grabbing has stopped! It's gone!!! I guess it was just time to change the oil in the differential.

I also stumbled across this: 1995 E300D Differential fluid
It also helped me get the issue resolved. I do appreciate all the advice and recommendations from you all. This forum is priceless!

That's awesome! I'm now questioning the value of the additive I recommended. Research time...

And I keep thinking I'd better hold on to that part number cause I'm gonna need it. LOL!
