IIRC, SD uses a different oil filter canister. There may be more minor differences I can't remember right now.

Ready to switch motors? I have hoist and leveler, The 80 300d. Is getting the 83 300td Engine and transmission. Any odd things I need to think about?. Are the differentials and driveshafts the same? I'll have to trade out exhausts, turbo pipes are bigger. Mike

I swapped a turbo engine into a 1980 NA 300CD - from a later model CD parts car - the drive shaft from the turbo car was larger diameter; there might be a reason for that. I used the driveshaft as well as the rear end from the donor - basically swapped the entire drive train. Took the instrument cluster too so the speedo would work. If you swap rear ends you'll want to find later model 123 cluster to match.

I also have an 83 300SD and the driveshaft has a vibration dampener that the W123 does not have. That car is very smooth - if it all fits up I'd say take the driveshaft from the SD with the dampener.

If swapping a turbo motor into the non turbo car (right), you'll want all the parts that are different. I'll try to list them all. Radiator, transmission, driveshaft, differential, speedometer, tach/clock. Physically you would not have to change the differential but the gear ratios are different and it is much recommended to change them too.

In order for this to be a success, you will need to study both cars for a day or so and take notes as to what is different.

Have an orderly plan and take entire assemblies off rather than just taking all the bolts out. Where possible, remove a part from the car you are fixing and immediately replace it with one from the donor. It is very easy just to take everything apart, much harder to put it back together unless yo have done this kind of thing a bunch of times.

If you put something together in a temporary fashion, don't "hand tighten" the bolts, leave them backed out a bunch ( like 1/2" or more ) so it is painfully obvious that there are not tight.

When changing engines or any other major project, as I take parts off then get set behind the car as far back as possible, on the same side from where they came then lay parts down working towards the car. If parts are intertwined , keep those parts together so you know to pick them up at the same time. You can even have a separate lane for under car parts. This way you know in what order to reassemble the car.

Above all, do not throw _anything_ away until the car is driving on the road for a few weeks, this includes old hoses and gaskets, yo might need them to source the proper new ones.

And, while the project is in process and later when complete , document what parts came from the donor so you know what to order in the future.

OH MAN... where is your Sense of Adventure ?
Take everything out and put it into one pile.... then work up from there...
the way Eli Whitney proved that interchangeable parts were practical...

Great advice. I am way over my head and that's ok with me. I plan to hook the turbo to the existing 300d differential. That should Make it quicker...right?

Depends on the power curve and the specific ratios of the gears combined with the differential ratio.

It is not difficult to swap a rear end. You could do the engine and trans then do the diff. As previously mentioned, you want to make sure that you have the correct ratio in the diff when going from NA to boosted.

I swapped a turbo into a Zcar once. The NA engine used a 3.90 rear end. The turbo uses a 3.57. The turbo didn't spool right with the 3.90. The 3.90 was great for the NA & would scoot down the road. The turbo scooted faster until the car rusted away.

I have never seen a engine pulled like that. Did You turn the vehicle upside down and loosen the motor mounts and let gravity do it's thing? By the way keep up the good work hope all ends well.

There are rotisserie automobile stands where you can do that..

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=rotisserie+automotive

Suggest pulling all the fuel out of tank....and all the brake fluid out of brake reservoir.

but you will need to protect the valve cover from the sudden stop at the ground.
LOL
