I got the engine in. Even started and ran around the road. The glow plug wires an box are different . The 83 has a some kinda contraption on the engine . I ended up just plugging in the 5 pin glow plug from the 83 into the 80 receptacle. Anyone know what I need to do

The 1980 glow plus were series wired (bad) and the 1983 version were parallel

Go find the relay box and sub harness from a 1981 > and install them .

Thx vwnate1. I will take out the wire harness for glow plugs from the 83 and put it in the 80. Question 2. What is this device on the engine with the lever that goes to the throttle. With the 7 pin plug. Next to the dipstick.. Mike

That gadget is the actuator for your cruise control.

Those things change according to VIN rather than ' year' designation. My 1980 240 is parallel...

Post Glow Plugs

You're welcome .

As Greg mentioned , German vehicles tend to make changes as they go along , during the production year rather than wait for the next model year .

This can give the Parts Guy fits but once you get used to it , you'll do fine .

Don't be in any hurry to scrap that cruise control ! whenever you decide to sell the car , things gone missing will usually lower it's resale value .

DO keep asking questions and posting what you're doing with pix as many here have over a decade of experience on your particular car and want you to enjoy it , knowledge not shared is WORTHLESS and here , no question is too mundane or trivial .

I'm a Journeyman Mechanic who's specialized in German Cars since the early 19070's but came late to Mercedes , everyone here has been *very* helpful in getting me up to speed , you too are welcome to jump in and learn then share your acquired knowledge .

I have the Benz on the road! Yay! Since the rear end is different. When speedo says 70 I'm going 55.. I think. Very peppy. The water hoses for the heater are a mess. The turbo oil radiator connector was stripped an I had to use the oil rad from the non turbo and ran the line over the top of the engine. . Other than that it rock an rolls. Mike
