Clutch problems on 300d euro
So I just purchased a 1984 euro 300d with the five speed getrag transmission. All the synchros seem in good order and the fifth gear overdrive works great on the highway. The one problem I have seems to be with the clutch. It is not as smooth as I think it should be. I have to be very slow and deliberate to get quiet and smooth action. Anything faster and it is very clunky. I also hear a little chatter from time to time when the clutch is released in gear. Maintenance records show the slave cylinder was replaced about six years ago. Any ideas?

Engine mounts (all three), lube all the throttle linkages, and you may also need to replace the "anti-jerk" miniature shock absorber, which should be attached to the throttle linkage near the injection pump.

Bleeding the clutch circuit can be a real pain. The factory procedure is to reverse bleed it. The clutch and brakes use the same reservoir. Attach a hose from right front wheel brake bleed nipple to the slave clutch bleed nipple, open both, and pump the brake pedal to force fluid through the clutch circuit.
Those are also very sensitive to having the correct clutch disc, so you may ultimately have to replace that, do a whole clutch job while you are there. |
