W124 power steering pump stalls under load ?

My power steering pump started this new thing where if you turn while not moving it will stop the belt from moving if car is jacked off the ground it turns fine other than some clicking noises from both strut towers !!

Not one person experienced this before ? I am gonna start with flushing and filling the fluid and see where that will get me.

How old is the belt? New EPDM belts wear like a tire tread. Eventually they wear enough that the belt rides on the peaks of the pulley grooves and as you can imagine there's not enough friction to keep the belt grabbing the pulley. EPDM belts don't crack, they just go "bald" like a tire.

Start with easy/simple/cheap. I like the idea to check your belt. I'd also recommend checking to make sure the belt is routed correctly (it IS possible to get it on wrong) and also check your belt tightener to make sure it is working correctly.

Any other symptoms? Is the steering effort the same? My initial thought is that there must be a blockage in the steering gear box that interrupts the oil flow when you turn the steering wheel.

Take a bar of hand soap. Rub the contact areas of the belt you can reach with the engine off. If problem is gone get a new belt.

I assume the belt is just not too sloppy? As another poster mentioned as a belt wears it can ride on the bottom. In that situation the belts vee sides traction is really diminished.

The belt have 3 minutes on it, old belt snapped because of the pump stopping so I changed it now the new belt STOPS as in stop spinning when pump tops

The belt is gripping for sure or else it would be slipping when pump stops no ?

This happened to me, turned out to be a bad ball joint. When replaced the power steering came back. I would not mess around with that, get the ball joints looked at ASAP. Mine popped out when my wife was driving, luckily she was close to home and there was no damage.

Funny you say that because the lower control arm on my wife's W210 broke in half two weeks ago and we towed it home now I am in the middle of changing it and the W124 acts up

I guess I need two new ball joints its due anyway.

If the engine is running and the power steering pulley wheel stops, the belt is slipping, by definition! Either it is slipping on the power steering pulley or the crank pulley, but it IS slipping somewhere!

Did you check the routing? If routed wrong, it WILL SLIP very easily, BTDT.
