Well I know it's not through lack of effort but I still have about 500 miles to go. Read today's installment also.

Installment 3: The drive

Ate breakfast and left the motel before the noisy children came down for breakfast.

First dilemma: I had parked away from everyone so that I could turn around and get out.

People parked too close to me for no apparent reason. I found guys willing to push the car backwards enough so I could clear the cars and get on the road.

This will happen three more times today, despite my best efforts.

Drinking lots of water and sweating it away. About 4 quarts! Am sure I lost some weight.

Grabbed a wrapped up chicken sandwich for lunch and scurried out the door. Big problem in Georgia: when a station is out of diesel, they don't put out a sign, then ask you if there's anything else they can sell you.

I was not amused, so I tanked up totally, tracking mileage carefully. Thus far: 744 miles on 19.7 gallons, never driving over 65 mph. About 37 mpg with the four-speed and no AC (lol).

Today I would have been happy to sacrifice mileage for AC, but that will happen when the car gets back.

I am a little concerned that the car does not brake the same way as the 240 with AT. Got to see if that's a vacuum issue or what, since none of my doors work and they did when I left Orlando. Could be something simple.

Speaking of braking: while driving some of these twisting roads with no visibility and frequent sudden stops, there was one impatient trucker who kept flashing lights etc wanting me to go faster than 65 on these turns, I went as fast as I could to avoid him.

At one turn, however it was accident waiting to happen. I saw him coming, knew he couldn't stop, so I drove onto the shoulder, with the next car now 25 feet in front of him.

SSSCCCRRRREEEEEEEEEECCCCHHHH! and he stopped a c**t hair behind that guy. I was next to him on the shoulder.

I waited until traffic started up again and took my place in front of the trucker.

I was surprised to see that he had let about 10 cars in front of him, like he didn't want to face me or be near me.

Don't know, don't care. Just kept away from him.

That and three four-mile long traffic jams due to accidents in North and South Carolina made me decide to hang it up at 6:00 pm and get a hotel room.

I called Don James and we will meet tomorrow afternoon, which works better for him, he has a couple things to do in the morning/

I will get sleep and prep better for the last day of the great Sweat Off down here in the very warm South.

I want this so bad. Have had an itch for a Citroen DS for a while now ... I think if it had a Mercedes diesel in it I might be less scared.

Hope the rest of the drive goes OK. I have been A/C-less in both MBs without bothering me much around town ... but it's brutal when you're out there on the highway for any time ... esp when the traffic stops moving. If it's really hot and I know I'm going to be driving a while, I take a cooler with some ice packs (and water).

Redneck A/C

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHQ0v3da2g4

I remember seeing a few videos of this setup on Youtube. Apparently it works well. And cheap. I might try it in my 84, which does not have a working A/C.

You can see a number of examples if you Google "Redneck Air Conditioning"

Think I'll just take your word on that! If I ever work up the courage to do my long-wished-for cross country trip, fixing the A/C is going to happen first for this reason.

Post Road Trip & Grinding Gears

Thanx for the up date ! .

I'm pleased to hear you like it , I like my 240D stripper prolly more than my turbo Coupe or turbo Euro spec. 7 passenger wagon , they're very sweet , you just have to go slower .

I find anything over 60 seriously affects the fuel economy .

I hear you about the jerkwad tuck drivers ~ lots of pickup and rice rocket drivers are the same way and cause collisions .

A simple test of the grinding into reverse ~ depress the clutch pedal and -hold_ it there , shift into first gear them s_l_o_w_l_y shift from first into reverse ~ it grinds ? most often the pilot bushing / bearing is bad and not allowing the tranny's input shaft to stop rotating unless it's being held by the tranny in gear .

I get a lot of these , a simple fix although the tranny has to come out .

I'm in Colorado to - night and have been watching idiots cause collisions and near misses for two days .

Save your money. Next year I will sell a DS21 for a reasonable amount after I finish a few details.

I was thinking how most motels have an ice machine outside somewhere. It would not be hard to replenish your ice supply while traveling.

I'm sure that's the case in customer friendly US of A - here you'd have to go to a supermarket and spend a fortune in frozen food!

Tip for Europeans - don't buy fish! (Imagine that thawing out in your DIY AC cool box)

I wrote this once and the system ate it. Here's the short hand.

Great driving yesterday despite the accidents and delays that ate up time.
The car performed well.1033 miles completed 300 to go.

More breakages: odometer dead.
'Removed the glovebox lights, was staying on all the time and eating up battery charge.

Got to Don James's place to pick up much Citroen tooling and 100+ pages of notes and drawings.

Bought some patent rights from him too. We'll see hope that works out.

Back to bed I'm tired.
Had to do this later, peachparts was doing maintenance when I tried to add this.

Thumbs up Travel Notes

Press on regardless ! .

Yesterday on the Colorado Plains we had a tire disintegrate , it happens .

We filled up on $2.49 Diesel yesterday ~ In Los Angeles finding Diesel fuel for under $3.00 is very difficult .

AHHH, but it is a dry heat, you just get dry roasted LOL.

When I have been to Phoenix, it seems like it is always July and 115F.
Also Dust Storms and the Monsoon season, try moist air and 115F.
