How to check A/C compressor condition on 1984 300DT?

A few years back, the A/C on the 1984 300DT quit working. How do I check whether the A/C compressor has cratered or not? Responses are appreciated.

Does the system still have pressure? Was the copressor noisy? We need more info from you.

The front of the compressor should turn by hand smoothly and not make any noise.
If it passes that test you could just be low on freon.
