Injection Pump
Stupid question maybe, anyone know what the silver like box bolted onto the injection pump, on the side closest to the head, on an om617 3.0 Turbo Diesel engine. I'm in the process of an engine swap for my tired old 84 mercedes 300d. The engine I bought that I was told came out of an 84 300D like mine, does not have this part bolted onto the injection pump. It has a black line that comes out of it that looks to be electrical or powered, as it has a 3 prong end. Any help would be appreciated.

That is the Rack Position Sensor. The black cable plugs into a plug on the FW, and goes to the Black Box behind the passenger side Kick panel.
The black box is to control the EGR. Also the signal for the Tach off the FW goes into this box. I believe the RPS was used in 84/85 300D/SD. And may have been used in just the kali Kars. Charlie

I 2nd post #3. My 1984 & 1985 300D's have/had the rack positon sensor, both CA cars. Since I removed the EGR valves, it serves no purpose. It is not desired because it makes it hard to get a wrench on one IP bolt when adjusting timing.
I have an earlier engine/IP in my 1985 now without the rack position sensor, and it works fine (your main question). But do leave the EGR controller box in since your tach signal comes from that. The head of the replacement engine also has 1 temp sensor in the head instead of the 2 in the 1985, so I have 1 hanging connector at the fwd end. That sensor goes to the EGR box, I think. Notice that they didn't share sensor signals between boxes in those days. I recall that none of my engines have the thermo-vaccum sensor on the T-stat housing, but perhaps the early engine did (plugged?). That one is for EGR controls.
