Cleaning pre chambers
Hi all,
I will be replacing the seals on my IP soon, I figure whilst I would have got the inlet manifold off I might also look at rebuilding the injectors - this would mean that the injectors would be removed from the pre chambers. Apart from inspecting to ensure that the internal ball is in place, should I also look to try and clean the pre chambers whilst still in the head? I am not sure when my glowplugs were last done but I think they were done fairly recently. I only want to do as much as I can whilst the inlet manifold is off owing to the fact that its not that easy to remove owing to a single bolt screwed in from under the car so not something I can do without jacking the car up and getting a long extension bar. I am tempted to just leave the injectors in place and just do the pump seals but is it worth checking/cleaning at all?

I would not do anything to the pre-chambers beyond inspection. There is too much risk of pushing debris down and plugging a pre-chamber hole. Also, the carbon build-up pattern has a dramatic impact on the amount of noise the engine makes, so if you alter that, your engine may sound MUCH worse until the carbon pattern returns to normal.

I pulled a couple of Prechambers on My 617.952.
Be sure the Piston is up near Top Dead Center because a bunch of stuff gets peeled off of the nose of the Prechamber when you pull it out and it falls inside. Sticking a Vacuum Cleaner attachement down the hole sucked most of the crud off the top of the Piston head. That works because you needed to remove the Glow Plugs and the open hole provides a good air flow to help move the crud. As viewed in the thumbnail what is in the Center is what fell on top of the Piston Head. But, you also see there is going to be carbon above that that will need to be cleaned out.

Thanks guys, I will have a think about it, the injectors seem to be ok, although I am pretty sure they aren't running at their best owing to the age of them - I don't have any history on when/if they were last rebuilt.
I am going to initially fix the IP delivery valve O ring leak first, just thought that I would see if there was anything fairly easy to do whilst the inlet manifold was off.

I too wouldn't do too much to the prechambers whilst they are still in position - the injectors however are worth checking

I have just paid for a spare key (car only came with 1) so will be holding off spending too much over the next few months!

Sorry I did not read your post Correctly.
I have not read of anyone cleaning the Prechambers while they are still in the Engine. In general unless there is Engine Oil getting up inside the Prechambers are genarlly have a fine even dry coating of balck Carboin on them that causes no issues. There is also not a lot of room to work in inside of the Prechamber (especially with the Glow Plug still installed). I suppose you could take something like a 1/8" brass Rod and fine a beveled end on it an insert that into the Prechamber and to some scrapingon the sides. Crud will fall down into the Prechamber and I am not sure useing the Vacuum Cleaner would work as well as it does when the Prechamber is enntirly pulled out.
