I had my glove box out last weekend and there are pods accessible through there but I think they were for the defroster - they were pink. I also saw a pink pod when I had the center dash section where the CCU control is. On my 83 the center vents are controlled with slides not pods.

I think it is possible to access the pods (at least enough to disable them) on a W116 through the glove box (liner removed) and/or the instrument cluster opening. As with a W123, the center vent arm may be removable so the vent is open all the time. I am not sure, but with the vacuum supply to the climate control (green hose?) capped off, the default position of all the pods may be acceptable. Worst case, they can be fixed to the position desired. Of course the best way in my opinion is to have all manual controls, but that would mean finding a donor Euro car and changing everything over.
