Elaplast Coolant Bypass Hose for W115 240D

I need to replace the short coolant bypass hose on the '74 240D. I've tried to make this repair with a piece of straight hose but on a W115 it ain't happening thanks to the double bend in too tight a space.

Pelican doesn't show ANY coolant hoses for a W115 240D . . .

Found this on eBarf:

Engine Coolant Bypass Hose Elaplast Fits 1974 1976 Mercedes Benz 240D | eBay

Anybody know about the brand "Elaplast"? Any good? Couldn't find any reviews that were meaningful, in this forum or elsewhere. Supposedly "OEM"?

I don't know your car, but for an 82-85 300D, some have use silicone hose (ebay, for turbos). It is more flexible, so might make the bends.

I assume you have a local MB dealer? I believe it is part 6152030282, but your local MB parts guy can confirm that. The retail cost is $16 at your local dealer or $16.50 plus shipping if you buy from peachparts. If you buy it from one of those online MB parts houses, the genuine part is available for as little as $12. Some of those online MB dealers even ship for free if you end up buying over $50 worth of parts.

I've seen folks here mention the silicone hose and other options. Is the bypass hose on a W123 616/617 a straight piece of hose? It's been a while since I had a W123 . . . On my cars it's got a double bend (see attached pic), and if you can even get a straight piece of hose on there it'll rub the forward most stud/nut on the chain tensioner. I've tried and did not care for the results.

Hmmmm . . I've used some URO hoses and not had a problem, but . .

I will go to the dealer for this hose. Yes, we have a MB dealer here in ABQ, and Pedro the guy I deal with in parts is very helpful.

Appreciate the ideas/thoughts.

A good way to find substitutions is to use the Gates Hose ID guide:

http://www.gates.com/~/media/Files/Gates/Automotive/Catalogs/Automotive/Gates%20Molded%20Coolant%20Hose%20ID%20Guide_Web.pdf

All the hoses they make are listed by ID, and there are photos starting on P 45. Find your ID, then do a visual to see if anything has a similar curve. You may have to cut down a longer hose.

I haven`t seen a W115 240D engine to compare to a W123 240D.
Should this W115 By Pass Hose become NLA, could a Water Pump housing
and a Thermostat housing from a 616/617 be installed and a straight piece of hose work?

Not a bad idea. I wonder about the radiator hoses, though. Maybe the fittings on the W115 radiator are close enough to W123 that the hoses for W123 would work. In case the W115 hoses wouldn't . . .

There were at least two different radiator hose configurations in W115 4 cyl. diesels. The therm. and water pump housings changed between '73 and '74, and so did the radiator hoses and where they connect.

I'd have to look at some W123 diesel engine pics to see if the hose placement at the therm. housing would interfere with the HERCULES W115 ac compressor bracket. That is if I want to put the AC back together. It worked when I took it apart.

I'm going to order two of these bypass hoses, BTW. I'm also stocking up on an extra set of MB upper and lower radiator hoses, while I can get them.

On a W123, that hose is straight, 1-5/8"ID (41 mm), 2" L.
Your bends look mild enough that a silicone hose might work, but the idea of buying pre-formed hose sounds better. Hot rodders deal w/ custom cooling hoses all the time. It is common to repurpose other hoses. Even for "standard hoses", many PN's are for various models and you are expected to cut out the section that works for your car. If you ever get stuck, the F-150 upper rad hose (1.5") is popular among rodders because long, with many bends, and cheap. You can add a metal splice to rotate sections, which is also a place to add a temp sensor, screen, or tap.

If you change to the W123 setup, looks like you would need both the T-stat and water pump housings. I doubt there is any advantage other than parts availability.
