Congrats!!! Both my MBs are in the 300K club now, with my Jeep just about to join the six-digit club. I thought I was about to hit the next mileage award in the 300D as I just rolled over 310K, but then realized looking at the form that for some reason it's 312K. Oh well, still soon!

Talking Rolling On The Miles

Oops ~

I have been out of town and got home , hopped into my beloved 1984 300CD Sports Coupe , lit it off and realized I'm @ 397,XXX miles , time for another routine HOT oil and filter service .

Maybe to - day as I have another Road Rally with a Sports Car Club Saturday morning.....

If you take any sort of care of these fine cars , they just keep on going like Sisyphus .

Agreed. The '95 does all the road trips these days but we don't travel as much so the miles don't add up as much as they used to.

Hey Nate, let us know when you hit 400,000. That's quite an accomplishment—what's been done to the car? Any major work? How many of those miles are yours?

My 1998 with 225k is the same. It does not consume any oil between changes and still runs smooth and quiet. I have put about 30k miles on the car in just over 2 years I have had it; I bought it in March 2013 with 196k.

Post 1984 300CD

O.K. ;

I've forgotten how many miles were on it when I purchased it , IIRC slightly over 300,000 , the turbo was seized and so on .

I peaked & tweaked it the best I could and put some 20,000 daily driver and road rally miles on it before it shuddered to a smoky halt early one morning after a spirited freeway run from SWMBO's house to mine.....

The previous idiot owners were typical brain dead Sta. Monica hippie trash who tought " Mercedes Diesel ! no tune ups EVER ! FREE FUEL ! " etc. ~ they ran it on anything they could buy cheaply and pour in the tank , they lost the fuel filler cap and left it street parked near the ocean...... you cannot possibly imagine how much abuse this poor old car took before they were unable to get it started and junked it .

When I took the engine apart the # 5 piston was ruined and the accumulated carbon build up from running unfiltered veggie , peanut etc. oil , have gouged a longitudinal grove in the cylinder about .050" deep almost as long as the cylinder .

I had to re sleeve the block back to standard .

Rebuilt the cylinder head , new bearing shells , lots and lots of seals and rubber bits blah blah blah.....

I'd unseized the turbo by disconnecting the oil input pipe and dribbling Marvel Mystery Oil into it while turning the impeller with a nut driver by hand . I really do need to overhaul it as it's beginning to smoke like crazy and has poor power off idle .

I had Victor overhaul the tranny last Summer , it was still working but leaked a fair bit and flared often on the up 3/4 shifts ~ he's the guy who invented one of the kits now available to replace the drum seals that always leak .

I think I replaced the upper ball joints a couple years ago , I don't keep sharp records , a mistake as I've had a buncha W-123's and still have three .

Original paint , needs a new paint job badly but the $ you know .

I'll try to get it to the local cars & coffee 7/11 .

I changed the oil & filter to - day , next oil change will be @ 400,000 shouldn't be very long as I love this old thing and run it hard and daily .

Impressive lot of work you did; congratulations on saving one from the junkyard.

Post Can't Save 'Em All

You have no idea .

I typically shop for vehicles in Junk Yards , Impound Auctions etc. as I tend to find the vehicle i want and I'm going to tinker it anyway so might as well .

If I listed all the routine in service repairs I've done to this car (much less the resat of the fleet), you'd get bored really quickly .

I took it on the Vintage Motoring Group's tour yesterday and it comported its self fairly well ~ in spite of the serious lack of power due to bad turbo and (I think) incorrect throttle linkage adjustment I was able to remain ahead of most of the drivers , in the steep hills with serious curves I had to keep the throttle pinned and manually shift in and out of second and third gears constantly .

It didn't want to rev. over 4,000 RPM , is that the governor ? .

I only got it sideways once , going into a decreasing radius turn too hot with my foot on the throttle no less , right where it narrowed from a skinny two laner to one lane , being a Mercedes of course , I simply let off the throttle and steered into the corner , it regained it's footing before I went into the ditch , I didn't even slow down .

The best part was : most of the run was in the hot sun and every time the road became level or went downhill a moment , I'd punch up the AC so it never got very hot in there , the vintage Sports Cars were all little rolling ovens .

At Saddle Peak we stopped for a bit and they were all talking about what a ' difficult technical route ' (pfft) it was .

After a nice drive and some good BBQ at the end , I went home and lit off SWMBO's '82 240D , aired up one low tire and drove it to her house , at 300 miles *exactly* the low fuel light went on so I tanked it up (24.7 MPG all with AC on MAX.) and drove it to her house .

As mentioned by many here , the NA 240D is really slow ~ I don't mind puttering along @ 65 MPH across America but the freeway merge @ 40 ~ 45 MPH is scary at times and , IMO , rude to the other drivers .
