300,000 miles!

Wife's car (the '96 E300D) turned over 300,000 miles today, leaving as our embarrassment only the '95 E300D with its paltry 224,000 miles. Another couple of years and the '96 will qualify for another mileage award!

Highest #of awards any of my cars has is 3... I'll be working on my 4th once I fix the headgasket and rack up another 250K or so...

Congrats on your milestone.
Gave away my 96 W210 to my nephew it had 288k on it. He is racking up miles on it and he will reach 300k in few months. It has been a great car and no issues when I handed him the keys.

Post Typical Mercedes Mileage

Amazing , isn't it ? .

In the 1960's Air Cooled VW's routinely made 150,000 + plus miles and we were well pleased .

Now , only one of my Mercedes Diesels has under 320,000 + miles and they still run fine .

The 240 needs a routine in service overhaul soon although it still gets 25 ~ 34 MPG's always with the AC set to ' COLDER'NELL .

I oughta look into the mileage award badges .

Gas engines in the 1960-80's tended to wear more because the carburetors often ran too rich, washing oil off the cylinder walls. Since modern fuel controls w/ O2 feedback began, that is much less a problem. My 2002 Chrysler 3.8L has 225K miles and still excellent compression on the original rings. The design is not much different than my 60's V-8 engines, other than the intake. The current Jeep 4.0L block is virtually unchanged since the 1950's. Ditto the GM SBC (until LS engines). They all last much longer these days. VW air-cooled engines usually needed rebuild before 100K miles. The temperature fluctuations (and sometimes higher temps) caused more wear. Even many motorcycles have water-cooled engines today. Diesel bottom ends have always lasted long because when the spray hits the wall, that is just more oil lubrication for the rings.

Jeremy, congratulations on hitting another Mile Stone. Think you will have it when you hit 400K?

Iam at 378K on the 240, you are going to have to peddle faster to catch me.

Done 300K+ several times now.

An engine that has *never been opened up to get there, is what I'd have expectations for in that model MB.

Right, Joe, the '96 has never been opened up. It neither leaks nor burns oil; I have no idea how long it will last.

You got a good one. N'ary a drop of engine oil leaks from my '99 E300 my Brother now owns either. Only has 135K miles on it.
