Turbo bearing material
What kind of material should be used for the bearings in the turbo? Are the bearings subjected to high heat, or does the oil keep them cool enough to use 660 bearing bronze?
Thanks, W. |

I had a turbo for a 300CD rebuilt and got all the replaced parts back, including those bushings. They sure look like bronze.

Yes they are some alloy of Bronze.
Note that the bushings are full floating and you can buy bearing and seal kits.

Where would I find bearings and seals? I looked on Peachparts and ********az, but didn't find anything either place.
A friend offered to turn up extras when he turns up his, but we started batting the idea of what alloy around, so I thought I would ask on the forum. Would aluminum bronze work ok, or would it wear the shafts? Would SAE 660 be better? Thanks, W. |

My local turbo shop has rebuild kits for around $50. It may be the same for your local shop, so check it out.

You didn;t mention which turbo you are rebuilding... I wasn't able to find the bearings at any other the general MB parts houses. But Midwest Turbo Connection (and a few other places) have the Melett rebuild kits for several Garett and KKK models. I'm just working on rebuilding a KKK K24 from an OM603, already replaced the bearings, pending some painting and final assembly.

Lots of turbo bearing kits on eBay and other internet sites. Most are likely from China but there are a few sellers that claim US made.
People also forget that if the Turbo has ever been rebuilt or especially if it was exchanged for another the it could have Bearings with an ID smaller and or an OD larger. That has only happened to one Person I read off. Bought the Standard sized Bearings and found they would not fit. If someone else is reading this the Turbos on the later Model (6 cyliinder)Mercedes that have Garrette/Air Research Turbos there is 3 different types of seals used on the Compressor side.
