w116 300sd Buzzer

1979 300sd (w116)

The buzzer sound is not activated when turning the ignition key. No buzzing sound heard

Anybody know if this is related to the "Steering Column Lock Micro Switch; For Warning Buzzer; With Pigtail" that is being sold at online stores.

Im hoping its a simple fix

you mean you want it to work? Can't stand the sound of those things.

that buzzing sound, lol, has saved me many times from leaving my lights on..

Own 2 w116 300sd's and been trying to use this weekend to make some repairs

Hmmm.... I didn't even know my 300SD was so equipped. Needless to say.... It does not operate on mine. (79)

The buzzer on the earlier cars had a particularly obnoxious screech. I am being reminded now that I am driving my '80 TD daily. Not sure if the unit is different or there is just way more sound deadening under the dash on the later models.

I remember I was much happier when I unhooked mine from my '79 300sd and I am sure many other owners did the same.

However, from your post, I am not sure if you just got this car and it doesn't work, or you mean it stopped working. So if the former, and you really want it -- I swear you may change your mind on that -- have a look under the dash with a light. I seem to recall it being mounted on a bracket, so it could be disabled by unplugging, without removal.

After hearing all of you, I might just forget about repairing it.

I just picked up this car a few weeks ago and I'm slowly trying to bring it up to where everything is functioning. I now own (2) 1979 300sd's.
One is maple yellow and the other is ivory.

Love these cars
Currently trying to put back together my headlight switch on my first 300sd.

I posted and requested help earlier but have not heard from anyone.

Just trying to find out if I can disconnect the headlight switch without splicing or cutting wires

I did not answer that because I have never had to do it on any of my cars, and was hoping someone who had would chime in. I am looking at the same thing on a TD that I am helping a friend take apart, and am trying to avoid butchery if possible.

You mentioned you have the cluster out, so if you put some light in there you will see that the wiring bundle for the light switch goes way back. Presumably if you go far enough there is a plug somewhere, but if it's like the w123 it looks to me that you would have to remove the dash to get to it.

Congrats on the two w116s. Nice to see someone keeping them on the road. I miss mine.
