Arrow Mercedes Diesel Mechanic - Charleston, SC ?

Hi,

I'm moving to Charleston SC at the end of July, and I'm looking for a solid recommendation for a local mechanic, preferably one who has experience with old Mercedes diesels, or just any reliable, friendly mechanic.

Thanks!

Also send Greazzer a PM. He lives in SC though I don't know the town. He's pretty active in the Benz world and might know the folks down there. We have a couple of independent Mercedes shops here in town but given that I do all of my own I don't have a real recommendation - Greazzer might fit that profile, too.

Hey Eric, just got your pm, sorry for the late reply but I've been on vacation, had to take a break from MB stuff for a bit.

Star Motors has been mentioned, Axel is the owner and they are a great place. They are outside of Charleston proper, in West Ashley. Usually they have lots of parts cars too, so you can check there if looking for used parts. I've never had any work done there other than testing some injectors for opening pressure, so I can't personally vouch for them, but I know they have a good reputation. Axel is very supportive of the MBCA, but our local chapter is not too active. He has hosted technical events at his shop in the past.

When I can't do a job myself, I usually go to see Hans at German Auto (on Rivers Avenue, North Charleston). I've been going there since I moved to CHS about 15 years ago. I've had them do the heavy dirty stuff that I don't or can't do, which requires special tools that I don't have or time that I must spend on other things, or when I have a complete mystery and need some help with diagnoses. I've only had two of my Mercedes need to be towed, and both times they went to German Auto.
