Put the summer wheels and tires on the CDI..... Better looks, less mileage

Installed a new set of tires on the summer wheels a couple of weeks before we took off on our annual summer trip to SC.

Original wheels and tires are 225/55-16, a substantial tire when you are used to W124 cars.

The summer set had new BFG G-Comp Sport 2 tires mounted on the AMG wheels I bought from Tyler H. The summer set is 245/40-18 front and 275/35-18 rear.

Comparing the mileage from our trip last summer using the stock wheels, I lost 5-6mpg with the summer set.

Was it worth it?
Oh yea.....

How long of a drive was the trip? What got you interested in the BFG G-Comp Sport tires? Not familiar with them?

How much pressure are you running in the tires? Shouldn't have been THAT much of a difference. I'll usually do 34 front 38 rear when going larger wheels and generally stay close to where my MPG's are on the skinny, less sticky stuff.

Though, who cares when it looks that good?

If the tires are bigger diameter than stock it will make you odo inaccurate and though mileage appears worse could actually be better.

Really good looking car.

Return was 485 miles.
I bought a set for our BMW Z3 earlier this year and have been pleased.

Downside is that they are not good for snow or cold weather, so the OEMs go back on for the winter. The Z3 doesn't get much use when really cold anyway....

But they look so good...

That would make a difference, I'm sure.
I measured 28 front, 32 rear just before taking off on the trip.

With those short sidewalls, I was concerned about making it too stiff.

Reported speed on the speedometer matched the Garmin road speed, same as with the OEM set. Overall diameters are pretty close, therefore.

Yep.
Still looks as good as it did when you sold it to me.
I do like the exhaust tips I added.

I figured you would be on top of that. But really hard to imagine the tires dropping the mileage so much.

Looks pretty sexy with those wheels. I'm sure it handles a lot nicer too with those tires..
