Where was it, exactly? Under the cam tower? Down in the passage farther back?

I was working behind cylinder #5 (not #3), so right in front of the firewall. Underneath the rearmost cam tower there is what appears to be an oil drainage. You can see it in the head picture posted by cooljjay. The problem was with the cam tower in place, there is very little space to maneuver & access the drainage.

Seals installed, valves adjusted. Epoxy the valve cover baffle (1985 300D blowby and poor milage | Mercedes-Benz Club of America) after lunch and I 'm ready to put her back together. I will update with results in a future post.

I 'm thinking of trying to remove just the rear tower. I have a broken old 617 I can try it out on first.
If you have an old broken 617, you should be able to take the head off and look at the underside and determine if the nut can come out. If it can't, I don't think i would worry about it. However; it it can work its way out, i don't imagine a rod hitting it at speed to be a good thing.
