which end of the hose should be disconnected. The monovalve side/or the firewall side. Or doesn't matter?

also, does the defrost switch have to be activated, key in on position?

The air/gurgling in the dash, I had that happen also. I had to do a quick repair in the dark and put the T-Stat in backwards. Luckily it was in the winter, but the temp gauge got to 100c. Next morning I fixed that issue.
