1983 240D stalling at light with A/C on

So now that I got my A/C working I've discovered the car will stall at a red light with the A/C on. I can keep it running by shifting into Neutral until the light changes then shift it back into Drive.

Any ideas?

What happens if you raise the idle speed with the little knob on the dash? What rpm are you idling at with the ac on?

Edit: oh yeah no tach on a 240D...I would either look for a photo tach or do the mod to the EGR box to drive a tach out of a W123 300D.

Poor little OM616 was only graced with 80-some hp and no automatic idle controller.

With the fully loaded compressor (and the R4 is a hog) and a heavy electrical load (the blower at max is probably 1/3 of the stock alternator capacity) I'm not surprised you are getting bogged down.

I would start with the idle speed and see where that takes you.

Anyone have thoughts on fixing or replacing the cable that runs from the knob to the throttle linkage, with the original part being NLA last time I checked? It seems just about every non-turbo W123 I run in to the cable is not working as designed any longer, usually due to the linkage end apparently breaking/deteriorating.

Um...
No.

The gorilla knob was the early pre w123 glow plug control, and engine starting handle... Also known as the salt shaker I think...

The idle adjust knob was on the later 240 and the na 300 w123's

Well at least I was not the only one using it wrong.... as I was able to find how to adjust it using that name...
It does not seem big or tough enough to have that name... I thought maybe it was the fact that it seems like it does no good to try to turn it.... that it took gorilla finger strength to actually turn it...

There are three different things being talked about here. On the early 123's and pre 123 diesels there were two things on the dash that were absent from later models. The Gorilla knob was the flat knob which one pulled out to position 1 and held there to complete the glow cycle, then pulled out to position 2 to start the car. You also pushed it in past the detent to shut off the fuel flow and thus shut down the motor.

The salt shaker is the little grid like affair (the holes look sort of like the top of a salt shaker) with a loop style plug inside it which you observe warming up and glowing till it's red hot before you pull the gorilla knob out to start.

These are replaced in the later 123's by the glow plug light in the dash and the vacume shutoff with the ignition key.

The idle control knob is a small flat knob under the instrument binnacle of some 123's, which you rotate anti-clockwise to increase idle speed, and clockwise to decrease it. Mine works perfectly as the previous owner replaced it a couple of years ago. When the idle speed increases the accelerator actually depresses slightly and it rises back to normal position as the idle speed is returned to normal.

It's an aid to warm up in very cold weather. But is unnecessary apart from that except in unusual circumstances, such as appears to be the case for the OP.

Just to further clarify things - I'm not aware of any W123 that came with gorilla knob or salt shaker. Those were W114/115 items. All W123's (starting with the first 300D in 1977) were equipped with glow plug relay triggered by the ignition switch being moved to the second accessory notch, and with a glow plug indicator light. The earlier W123's were a bit different, when it comes to starting, in two key ways - 1) the early W123's had a different glow plug relay, a silver box under the dashboard attached to the steering column with loop style glow plugs wired in series and 2) the early W123's had a idle control knob that, per the owners manual, is used to increase idle on cold start and then lower idle as the engine warms.

If the idle control knob/cable on the OP's car isn't working because of a bad cable, or a broken knob, or both that's the place for him to start.

I always thought that 123's never had the gorilla knob or salt shaker but my comments about very early ones having them came from seeing pictures of very early 123's, 76 and 77 on ebay.de (ebay Germany) with what looked suspiciously like gorilla knobs in place of the Idle control knob.

As for the Idle knob. The Turbo's never had them but I think all the NA ones did thruout the production run.

Thanks all. My cable is toast. The end in the engine isn't connected to the linkage and the knob won't turn on the dash.

Can anyone help me out find the part number for that cable? What would it be called? I tried Idle Cable in the search but didn't see anything.
