Call me crazy please

So, I came across a 300D that the owner needs to get rid of. Im thinking parts car for my kids 87 wagon for things like the ACC, AC system(converted to R134) and other major or minor bits. It seems to me parts from a 300D will be direct fit for a 300TD, right?

The known bad is that the car was run on ""biodiesel"" which the owner said was WVO mixed with some chemicals allowed to sit and then he mixed it 50/50 with D2. He claims the car ran fine, but now does not after sitting for a 1 year plus. It cranked and started briefly, then dies...like there was no fuel to it. I suspect the usual-filters and such but also there is a suspect SOV too.

The other major is the roof had been the victum of tree limb years ago and now the bondo/paint has come off in large pieces. Its pretty ugly.

Im thinking of having it towed and start using it for parts. Am I nutz?

PS the price is right by my math.

If you have the space and time, it may be better than going to a junk yard if you want a lot of parts.
However, isn't a 87 wagon a W124; a 300D (I assume) is a W123 so it's slightly different and it won't have any of the SLS suspension parts of a wagon.

Get it. The alternative fuel probably has destroyed the IP and maybe the injectors, but the rest of the engine parts are probably good, depending on the mileage. The big difference to the wagon will be the dual circuit power steering pump, unless you found a sedan with ASR or SLS.

Head, starter, alternator, wiring harness, injector lines, etc. Many many nice parts to have. Vacuum pump if newer style, IP timing device, timing case cover in the event your's cracks, serpentine belt tensioning device / shock / spring...

Front bumper back to B-pillar is identical body-wise. Transmission and differential the same? That needs research, I suspect different. A lot of the interior is same back to B-pillar as well.

So buy it for scrap price. Take what you want then sell it. I have 60 acres out in the country and the metal thieves have tried to haul my 78Zcar off. I'll put up cameras but an extra car or 3 isn't a problem. I keep an 85SD parts car in the drive in town but the hoood is down and it just looks like I drive 3 Mercedes.

you're crazy...

see my signature...

get it. the entire driveline is the same if it's also an 87... if it's a 90+, then the transmission is not the same, nor are the flex discs, so the diff, while it is the same ratio, it will have the smaller flex flange... and NO you cannot just swap over the flange!

if it's a 95, then WOW, you got a cool motor, but still not the same trans...

Ok I'm crazy and going for it. Thanks for confirming my nuttiness. There's a lot of ways this could go, best case it's salvageable and runs great worse its a parts store.

There is often consolation in knowing you are not the ONLY crazy one...
of course... if you have a wife... or city code to deal with...
that might not help your life situation..

I'd argue it's only "crazy" if someone is buying parts cars for cars they are certain they will 'never" own! Except for that, anything else would clearly fall under the rubric of "prudent investment in the future"!
