W123 Diesel emergency tool and parts kits

I'm putting together standardized tool and parts kits for my 123s.

Aside from one W126, I'm probably going to stay with the MT W123 cars as fun and economical, with some minor additions (extra sound proofing).

Here's my list of tools and parts feel free to comment:

Tools for the trip in a W123

Ό” drive deep well metric 6mm-10mm (reach glow plugs and other small nuts)
Ό” 3” extension, 6” extension and T-bar/breaker bar
3/8” drive std metric sockets 8mm-19mm (use Ύ” socket if no 19mm around
3/8” drive breaker bar and pipe, plus ratchet an 3-6” extension
8mm-19mm combination wrenches
5/166” 3/8” 7/16” combo wrenches for battery posts
Small vise-grip locking pliers
diagonal cutting pliers
regular slip joint pliers
10” adjustable wrench
6mm and 8mm Allen wrenches
one small or medium henway
one stubby and one std Phillips and flat blade screwdrivers
one foot long pipe for leverage to tire/lug wrench
MB tool kit, lug wrench and jack with wheel chock
plastic fuse remover
utility knife

Parts to take:
One each of all three belts
one each large and small fuel filters
One each secondary fuel pump
two each pipe sleeves to slide inside radiator hoses in case they blow after a belt releases and you don’t stop it in time
3 feet of #10 wire and a small box of crimp ends
one foot neoprene fuel line and one foot mini line for fuel return
Assorted fuses
Radiator cap
Water, trans fluid, oil, brake fluid
6mm or Ό” bolt to put inside cut brake hose, clamped by vise grip to prevent loss of all braking
10’ bailing wire

What's a henway?

I'll probably have some more, but right off the top, 10mm Allen wrench and duct tape and JB Weld (maybe JB Quick) and knife.

Uh? That's a lot to carry around. .. why? Are you a long way from home?

In trunk around town, I'd carry a set of fuel filters.
Wrenches to change them.
Fuses.
A 17mm open end for bleeding injector lines...
That's it...

Now for a trip I'd carry more but it's just not needed near home.

Right now in my trunk I've got:

A radiator
A glow plug relay
A rear view mirror
An aux fan
A shut off actuator
A VCV
Two turn signal housings
Plus a full socket set, a tool box and another tool roll full of tools

BUT that is because I was just pulling stuff at the junkyard and haven't unloaded it yet :)

Normally I don't carry much.

Fuel filters. Voltage regulator. Some fuel return line. Basically just a few things to fix stuff that can suddenly and without warning strand you somewhere but that are so easy to fix you'd be irritated to have to tow the car as a result. And of course the tools needed to do the above, and change a tire.

Otherwise, for anything more, I just have a tow service through my car insurance.

Then again I do lots of preventative maintenance so the plan is to not break down!

I carry a similar kit plus food & water, a hatchet, sleeping bag & my Beretta 40 S&W along with my usual gear whenever out in the boonies fishing or hunting. Extra food and water for my dog If he's with me. Don

Good thread

In addition to above

-Spare relays

-Spare hazard switch

-At least a quart of all fluids (brake/steering/oil), water

-I carry a small hydraulic jack and jack stand. Don't trust that oem jack deal.

I wonder if the GVW is exceeded carry all this stuff? haha

I tend to be OCD on this stuff -- tool-wise -- but I must admit I don't bother with belts or hose inserts. I remember that I did carry belts when I had my first 300sd but they just rotted in my trunk over the years.

The pipe inserts are a very good idea.

Oddly I don't think anyone mentioned bulbs. I carry one H4 and several of the others.

Also a thermostat. And hose clamps.

Time to rationalize my trunk toolbox again as it's morphed into a 25-pound monster.
