87 300sdl Hood Catastrophe

Well, today was a very sad day. While driving along at about 45mph my hood suddenly flew open bending all the way back over the windshield. The Mercedes emblem even hit the sunroof leaving an awful dent.

I am very lucky that a more serious accident didn't happen. I am still in shock.

I had replaced the sunroof fuse about 20 minutes before and clearly remember firmly closing the hood.... Guess not eh

Anyway, I am in need of a new hood and have a question regarding hood compatibility.

I found a 1982 300SD on craigslist that the guy is completely parting out.

Will a 1982 300sd hood fit on a 1987 300sdl?

It did not break your windshield ?
RLeo went to pick up a parts car and took it for a test drive.. and the hood blew up and broke the good windshield he wanted...
So you are relatively lucky...

If someone here does not answer your question LKQ has a great system for body parts compatibility. Call one of them they may even have one.

By some miracle... no it did not. It instantly bent in half and all the impact was on the sunroof...

I think it is 86 through 91 from memory, then 81 through 85.

Once more , with feeling No fuel, oil, hood latch: diesel dilemmas

I brought this up to keep everyone aware of the few easily self induced problems.

The safety catch is supposed to keep this from happening unless the hood was just pushed down a bit and it didn't engage or was not adjusted properly.
