Wet Left foot going through puddles.
I was driving my 1983 240D in a Florida Thunderstorm and when I drove through some deepish puddles I felt some water drip on my left foot. This car has sat outside in Thunderstorms with no leaks and no rust on the floorpans. I'm assuming there is some rust holes or something in the wheel well but I figured I'd ask for advice before tearing everything apart.
Thanks in advance. |

Close the door before you drive it.

Hood Spring pockets
Check your drains under the hood springs, they will rust out if they dont get cleaned on a regular basis. Rusting there can let water into the cabin
Also there is a sealant that goes bad over time in the cowl vents (under the wipers) there is a metal seam in that cowl pocket that has some type of water proofing. It ages and can let water in There are more drains, but this may lead you in the right direction to correct this problem, while you are at it check sunroof drains too Im waay too familiar with the florida sky opening up...pretty brutal sometimes |

Also the windshield gasket can leak.

Once cleaned... and if rusted perhaps a sprinkling of Metal Prep then rinse with water.. then dry.... and spray with ' fluid film'.... you can get that from tractor supply places.. it is sheep oil.... lanolin .... and has a good reputation for protection where access is really limited..

Not to put too fine a point on it, but why should we accept that a trout has only one foot that is wet?

pull the fenders off...
pull the plastic covers off the wheel well... treat the rusted out areas there.

RESEARCH your car first...
as some fenders are GLUED ON.... and a large even infrared heat source will be needed for that... not many are included in this list... but if yours is one of them... yikes...

Nahh. They're not glued on. There is body good on the underside of some fenders, but it doesn't hold the fenders on, just weatherguards the bolts etc.

Some are definitely glued on. Or perhaps that is not the technically correct term but I have had to cut fenders off before because of the glue, and or undercoating.

LOL,
Thank you TOM.... I have pictures in the FSM of a huge bank of infrared heat lamps shown for getting the thermal setting glued on fenders off SOME of our cars.... After all these years and Vstech still does not trust me not to make up stuff.... knowing I have a stack of MB shop manuals here keeping my chair level....

Heh... I trust you. I've seen a LOT of glued on fenders, I guess all of mine have been easy.

On old cars you really may have gotten lucky.... UPDATE .... http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/1436630-removing-fender-glued.html this has picture of the fsm manual... saying that after 1981 ( I had an 81 wagon ).... they are no longer glued.... and this guy had a 1980 wagon... http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/1460620-help-removing-fender.html Some of these things are in ' maintenance manuals' printed later than the original FSM's... but there is a picture of a setup which is like many body shops use to bake paint on a car.. being used for Evenly loosening the glue on a full front fender in one of the FSM's.

OK. Good news! There was no glue. Bad news one rusted screw head that was round so required a grinder to remove. Here are some pictures. Rust isn't too bad but look at all of those pine needles behind the fender!! The fender had some rust holes which I was going to repair anyway.
From the looks of it the rain was coming through the hood hinge pocket. I'm going to have my kid pour some water in there and see what happens. One question about the hood hinge now that I have it off. The hinge seems to want to bend towards the outside of the car. In the picture I show it it's relaxed position and it's over the side wall. Any thoughts? Thanks again to the people here. This board is one of the main reasons I bought this car as I definitely need help and it's a great community. |
