No one ever notices. I just have the hood ready to go, feed the coins, get the soap flowing & raise the hood. Isn't cleaning the engine part of testing the official FSM described external oiling system?

old school

My old school degreaser is gasoline and paint brushes - flat ones and pointy ones with long handles.

you should not post things which you know are not safe.
OR if you do not know that is not safe I am telling you that right now.

I found that diesel/kerosine works better than gasoline, because it doesn't evaporate as fast. It is also much safer. If you work outdoors on a concrete pad and don't smoke, there is little danger even w/ gasoline. You are only using a few ounces at a time. But, I found that the degreasers work better anyway. I will try LA Awesome next time. I even have a bottle in the garage, but didn't think to try it.

I guess you're unaware that in the shooting sport it is standard practice to clean an old cosmoline covered surplus rifle with gasoline... Out in the open, with gloves on, no ignition source nearby. Why is that dangerous? You're more likely to burn in your own home due to a kitchen grease/dryer vent/chimney fire.

I grew up helping my dad with the car and we always washed the tools and our hands in gasoline afterwards. We never finished no matter how late it was without cleaning the tools and putting them away - no matter how tired we were.

Leave it to you to post a totally unrelated and wrong example.
If your CAR is covered in COSMOLINE.... go ahead and use gasoline to clean it.

Even the gun sites are smart enough not to use gasoline for cleaning....

Everybody except you has figured out long ago that mineral spirits will do just as good a job.... It is a wonder you have not fallen to the Darwin Rule already.

I guess you're also unaware of what cosmoline is. It's grease Greg, GREASE. Do you know what a solvent is? Did you know gasoline is a great solvent? If you think gasoline in the open air will just spontaneously combust, I have a large amount of incredibly rare $3 bills to sell you.

I can already hear you typing all of those unnecessary ellipses....................................

I am also sure that if you could ask everyone who perished by running a generator in their attached garage or a kerosene heater in their house, none of them would say " I know this could easily kill me but lets give it a try any way". With out looking it up are you aware of the LEL of gasoline?

I have been in some odd ball countries where the degreasing of incredibly greasy stuff goes as this.

1 - use old brush and apply used engine oil/hydraulic/atf to douse and soften stuff.
2 - keep on working it till the caked on grease starts to run
3 - kero/diesel mix or gasoline to wash it off (the dirty gasoline is reused to keep on scrubbing and cleaning) of the same parts - the drip pan has a deep end with a rough grit guard so you dont mix up thick dirt again.
4 - job done.

I have done it too once or twice, not too bad if you are not a part of the 3 stooges show. I still use some ATF to soften the gummy burnt up grease on old parts. Comes out nice.

My degreaser of choice is mean green from walmart, it cleans better than simple green but you use it neat, unlike simple green which you cut with water first.

Wrong again. I use whatever works well, is cheap, and easy to get. I've cleaned so many cosmoline coated rifles with gasoline I lost count. I clean engine parts with gasoline, oven cleaner, Mean Green, and dish soap depending how filthy they are. I also start camp fires with a spritz of gasoline. If you have a brain between your ears, you'd be amazed what a person can do safely with things thought deadly by another person. Just use your head.

The idea is to avoid Unnecessary Excessive risks..... since all those gun sites clearly say mineral spirits are effective for cleaning the spurious example of cosmoline you offered up...
