Has anyone ever converted a 4-cyl 190/201 to MT?

I have a great OM601 engine, and it would be even greater if I could make it a manual.

I know there are later models in MT with the five speed.

Has anyone ever done a conversion?

If all else fails, can I use sa W123 240D MT instead of the other one?

Does anyone know?

Anyone got a W201 for sale as a donor car?

Plenty of swaps have been done, a couple of members here have put 5spds into 190d. A search shpuld reveal the threads. You can't use a 240d transmission because the starter motor is on the wrong side. As a general rule of thumb all om601/02/03/06 and m102/03/04/11 transmissions are interchangeable. Om616 and om617 and m110 are a completely separate family of their own.

Should be a straightforward swap.

Not quite but almost!

I did go from 4 speed to 5 speed with my W201 (see link in sig)

Chassis-wise the following modifications will be needed

1) Different brake fluid reservoir (or a separate reservoir for the clutch)
2) Pedals!
3) Gear shifter and rods
4) Different cross member (if going for 5 speed)
5) Additional captive nuts for cross member (if going for 5 speed)
6) Shorter propshaft (ideally a matching pair and not just the shorter front section
7) Different flex disc on the front part of propshaft (has cushioned style fixings)
8) Propshaft vibration damper (this will probably set the cat amongst the pigeons because "some say" it isn't needed)
9) Longer speedo cable required for the 5 speed gearbox (auto transmission and 4 speed cables are shorter)
10) Pipes and the clutch slave and master cylinders

Engine-wise modifications

Obviously the flywheel needs to be changed but there's one heck of a lot of a uncertainty about dual mass flywheels and whether they can be fitted to certain gearboxes or not - and then there's solid flywheels and whether they can be fitted to certain gearboxes or not

Vacuum connection to transmission needs to be blanked off on inlet manifold

Throttle linkage needs to be adapted to not have a Bowden cable - further information needs to be found about the differences between OM601 throttle linkages for automatics and manual transmissions => there is a difference between these parts for the M102 - so perhaps this is also the case for the diesels...

...I can't think of anything else at the moment but I might come back for round #2 in a bit!

...oh yeah W123 gearboxes won't fit the later OM60X engines with out a botched adapter plate type conversion (starter on wrong side etc)

Easy as pie. A day job with help and all the parts from a donor car. A weekend if working by yourself. I think I may still have a couple parts around for this swap if you need (driveshaft, pedals ?).
