W126 Gen II Front Rotor Preferred Brand

1986 300SDL

Replacing the front rotors. What brand is recommended by the forum.

I've searched and can't find any advice.

I'm looking for vented rotors. Dealer in Atlanta offers MB for a reasonable price. However I'd like to do the R&R this weekend so a closer source would be good.

Just wondering if anyone has a preference on those offered by our sponsor (MB NLA from Peach), or other sources. Or will any old discount brand be fine?

I suppose I should ask the same in regard to calipers.

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked your local MB dealer? You might be pleasantly surprised.

Remember anywhere you order online you will have to pay the freight and it is not insignificant with rotors.

The dealer has absorbed the freight cost in the part price so to make a fair comparison you need to look at (online price + freight) vs (dealer price).

And another thing, I don't know about the laws in CA, but in SC, everything I buy online that does not collect SC sales tax requires me to declare the amount on my state tax return and apply my 8 percent tax rate to those purchases and pay that amount.

A bit different out here in the Soviets of OR & WA. Oregon has no Sales Tax but has an Income Tax, Washington has no Income Tax but has a Sales Tax. Don

Is there a rotor brand preference.... anybody?

Thanks for the tax info....Tax or no tax... no matter.....just wondering if there are brands to avoid based on experience. Dealer here can get them for a steeper price but available.

But like the lemforder (sp?) components with out the star I'm wondering who makes the star brand brake rotor units? Or maybe brembo, ate, etc. may be just fine.

Thanks

ATE and Brembo make some OE applications for certain models.

Brembo and Zimmerman are (or were, these days it's hard to keep up) German castings.

However, the quality of all rotors has gone south. In Cali you won't be worrying so much about that, but where I am in the northern rust belt (winter road salt, summer humidity) rotors are failing quicker than ever before.

I have rears (ATEs or Zimmermans, I forget which) that are about three years old. I am going to replace them on the weekend because they are literally losing chunks of surface material.

Thanks guys for the input

Got a case of the willies about aftermarket rotors and ordered some fresh Mb models.

I'll let you known if there's a mpg stamp on the rotors.

And the dealer rotors run only about $15 bucks aside more than mid priced aftermarket goods. Guess ya gotta pay shipping even if ya pick 'm up yourself lol

Thanks again all.

I've moved to just using MB parts for that stuff, the quality remains high on parts from the dealer (or original MB parts sourced online) I actually got a full set of MB rotors reasonably priced here on Pelican this past spring for my 420SEL.

I agree with your thoughts. I prefer to buy from the forum sponsor however they were listing MB rotors for the 300sdl as NLA

Sometimes that's catalogue error, just double check the rotor size. What is listed as NLA may still be listed under a different model that uses the same parts (like a 420SEL vs 300SDL etc...)

Or you could call them and usually they can find it...

Photo of MB Rotor

Bought two and replaced the old rotors. Braking is smooth again.
Side by side the MB rotor feels much heavier than the aftermarket rotor it is replacing. Didn't weigh them lol.
