It does not change the valve to injector timing UNLESS you fail to set the injector regularly using the 2mm movement of the number one intake and the drip method..
that is a bottom line adjustment for whatever wear has accumulated in the chain, sprockets.... etc....

Hmmm well I highly doubt the po did that, even though they did have it serviced at a very reputable shop in Tucson I can't any records of anything like that, how hard is it to take care of that after I change the timing chain

It really is not hard at all.... tedious...as is most of the jobs on our engines...
but well documented in the FSM... do you have a FSM for your NA engine ?

A lil help would be awesome lol, I'm used to working on Hondas and American muscle cars and diesels, I've said it before I'll say it again these things are totally different beasts, but I'm trying to learn, I need to suck it up and buy the fsm for it. Thanks to the army I can access Chilton's and all data but they don't really have to much about the diesels

If you possibly can..... obtain a paper copy of the manual... and not one printed off an electronic version.... you will be happy to have it that way...
then just sit down and read it front to rear.... that is how little things like that rattle when cold possibly being a non problem are found.

Well I'm back, today I adjusted the valves and I was meticulous, I also replaced the timing chain which, it was definitely due, I lined up the cam marks ( I know it's not accurate) but the timing mark wasn't even close to the crank marks, anyways she's running so mu smoother but still when hot she doesn't like to restart and has no power and revs slowly, it only does this when hot it doesn't matter if the ac is on or not, anything else that I should check?

Can you tell if this made any difference to your mpg's? I think that 25 at 65 highway is too low for your car. Unless automatic and A/c might impact it.

I thought the same thing, hell in the city the last tank I only got 21mpg, I just got finished with the timing chain and I went ahead and changed the oil and swapped the stamped steel water pump for a cast, I haven't been able to put enough miles on her to check mileage, and it's a 4spd so the auto can be tossed out

Something seems wrong. I'm getting consistently between 28 and 31, mostly city with some occasional highway runs at about 65 to 70. My previous 240D, also an 81 manual averaged slightly better than that. Usually around 30 to 34 in identical driving.

Yeah I'm gonna run a couple tanks through it and check my mileage, the only thing left for me to do is the injectors, she has a lot of blow by, but she doesn't burn any oil
