I know you are right, I am having some thoughts about it though.
I will be literally doing this in a field with extension cord for power and no helper or anything...... I think I will clean up the leak that is apparent and maybe top off the transmission with a gear oil and see if/how much leaks out. If the neighbors house sells then a bunch of room will clear up in the shed on my property and I may be able to set up a better work station to do this job. Until then, I have all the info I need (now) to do my research and start gathering parts.

I have heard that before, IS it just the dex/Merc III that goes into the autos? Ill search a bit but wouldn't be a bad idea to swap it over to the correct stuff.
I really need to clean and diagnose the trans before I get to far along I guess.
