83 300D driver window won't go up all the way

Of course this happens with multiple days of rain coming...

The front driver side window (electric) moves up and down just fine, but once it's about 1/4 of the way up, it stops going up and starts making a fairly loud, fast, metallic clicking sound.

I took the door panel off so I could just manually push the window up for the time being, but at the same place, every time, the window stops and it sounds like it's hitting something (makes a metallic sound). Like something is loose and in the way. Again, this is with me manually pushing the window up.

All the bolts are tight, the motor seems very strong...

It could be gear teeth are ground down and that's what making the clicking sound... But ... When I push up manually it seems like something is in the way and it makes a sound. I'm afraid to apply too much force.

Anyone had this happen? Thought I'd ask before I rip out the regulator.

Update: got lucky. As a last attempt before taking out the regulator, I told myself 'screw it, once the window gets to the trouble spot, I'll hold the window button in the up position for no more than 6 seconds and just see what happens'. The window stalled, made the clicking sound, I kept holding the button, and after 3 seconds the window finally got past the trouble spot and went all the way up.

But now, with the window all the way up, if I continue holding the window button, the window is still trying to go up. Something ain't right.

You need another window regulator. The teeth that move the regulator arm are broken off at that particular point. You can get one from a yard. Anything from a 123 should work. Get the motor with the regulator. There are at least 2 motor/regulator combinations. Either will work but the motors have to go with the correct regulator. There are 2 plastic slides that keep the tracks aligned. Order 1 of each in case you need them. I always keep a few spares around but only replace them when mine break. edit: don't buy the URO slides.

You can test the yard motor by simply touching the wires to a battery terminal. be sure to examine the teeth of the motor and the regulator itself. Also make sure that the arms aren't bent.

Clean and relube the slides prior to install. MB sells a special paste that works well. I've also used slyglide. Having a freshly lubed regulator makes them work like new. Having the regulator out of the door to clean it works much better than trying to clean it while installed.

The window regulators from a W123 coupe are diffferent from a sedan/wagon.

Damnit. Well, the window is up, and as long as I don't drop it past the 'trouble spot', I should be ok.... For now...

Both rear windows move up and down fine, but once they reach the maximum height, if you hold the button in the 'up' position, they keep trying to go up and make clicking sounds. I'm thinking they need new regulators too... Is this correct?
