Flooring it on the freeway?

I drive an 82 240d. Should i have to floor it to pass somebody on the freeway? Just cruising it isn't far from the floor

Shortsguy1 09-19-2015 09:52 PM

You are able to overtake someone while you are in a 240d? Consider yourself lucky.

Shortsguy1 09-19-2015 09:54 PM

In other words, yes it is reasonable to have to floor it.

dude99 09-19-2015 10:18 PM

Absolutely... When I was daily driving my 79 I think it spent most of its time with the pedal to the floor... and it had more power than yours does. So yes, thats normal.

Ears 09-19-2015 10:21 PM

That actually makes me feel a lot better lol. And mostly just passing semi trucks

mannys9130 09-19-2015 10:37 PM

On the highway, my 190D needs full throttle to speed up at all. It's at 3/4 pedal to do 75 all the time. Going up hills at 75 needs full throttle and it gets pretty hot doing so as well.

I'd say pedal to the metal is normal for a 240. :)

On the bright side of it diesels are best used under a load. Idling around town passing no one just carbons them up. Try using the jockey proding the race horse motion while passing, it seems to help with my 300D.:)

sloride 09-19-2015 10:43 PM

Are there any semi drivers out there willing to say they just got passed by a 240D:D

Ears 09-20-2015 12:06 AM

I'm from California so they can't drive very fast

mannys9130 09-20-2015 01:50 AM

Lots of semis are governed at 65 and can't go faster. It gets annoying when you're on the rural I10 and you have to keep passing trucks left and right.

uberwasser 09-20-2015 02:06 PM

Well and as he said, in California any trucks with trailers are often required to stay below 55 mph even on roads with limits up to 70 mph for cars.

renaissanceman 09-20-2015 07:09 PM

Which, many times, can cause a lot more dangerous conditions than semis doing 70mph, in my opinion...

Skippy 09-20-2015 10:46 PM

When I had a 240D I spent a lot of time with my foot to the floor. One time I had it floored going up a mountain pass on the way to San Diego and I got passed by an International Eagle pulling a 53 foot trailer.

MBeige 09-21-2015 12:56 AM

In my travels here in southern CA, semi trucks are restricted to 55 but often times during night drives, they do speed up to 70. I still pass them effortlessly with my 300D. Grapevine drives are uniquely entertaining, a lot of folks who pass me in my 300D on the flats typically don't do well on the inclines, and that's where I pass them with my 300D.

In order to ensure maximum throttle, make sure the linkage clearly shows that the throttle stop is reached when the pedal is applied all the way. If not, then you aren't really maximizing its full potential.

charmalu 09-21-2015 11:53 AM

Are all these 240D`s that you guys have to keep floored (peddle to the metal) automatics?
I really don`t have this problem with my 80 240D manual trans.

I agree as to Mbeige said.
Things have to be properly adjusted and working correctly to maximize max pwr.

I had this part fail on my 240, the rubber was tearing in two. so I could
not get to full movement to the linkage.

This part was used on the 80 240D and SD. Not sure of the 300D or if only one yr or???

Here is the thread on that.

Make sure all the Ball and Sockets on the linkages are lubed. Most I see
in the yards haven`t see any type of lube in years and are rusty.
