I drive an 82 240d. Should i have to floor it to pass somebody on the freeway? Just cruising it isn't far from the floor

You are able to overtake someone while you are in a 240d? Consider yourself lucky.

Absolutely... When I was daily driving my 79 I think it spent most of its time with the pedal to the floor... and it had more power than yours does. So yes, thats normal.

That actually makes me feel a lot better lol. And mostly just passing semi trucks

On the bright side of it diesels are best used under a load. Idling around town passing no one just carbons them up. Try using the jockey proding the race horse motion while passing, it seems to help with my 300D.

Are there any semi drivers out there willing to say they just got passed by a 240D

On the highway, my 190D needs full throttle to speed up at all. It's at 3/4 pedal to do 75 all the time. Going up hills at 75 needs full throttle and it gets pretty hot doing so as well.

I'd say pedal to the metal is normal for a 240.

I'm from California so they can't drive very fast

Lots of semis are governed at 65 and can't go faster. It gets annoying when you're on the rural I10 and you have to keep passing trucks left and right.

Well and as he said, in California any trucks with trailers are often required to stay below 55 mph even on roads with limits up to 70 mph for cars.

To the OP- yes full throttle is needed to pass. That's normal.

When I had a 240D I spent a lot of time with my foot to the floor. One time I had it floored going up a mountain pass on the way to San Diego and I got passed by an International Eagle pulling a 53 foot trailer.

In my travels here in southern CA, semi trucks are restricted to 55 but often times during night drives, they do speed up to 70. I still pass them effortlessly with my 300D. Grapevine drives are uniquely entertaining, a lot of folks who pass me in my 300D on the flats typically don't do well on the inclines, and that's where I pass them with my 300D.

In order to ensure maximum throttle, make sure the linkage clearly shows that the throttle stop is reached when the pedal is applied all the way. If not, then you aren't really maximizing its full potential.
