primer pump and fuel hoses

Hello,

about 1 month ago i replaced my primer pump and noticed yesterday that there was some liquid around the seal of the pump. When i installed the pump (the black top one) i left the golden washer on the end of it. Should this be removed? (or do i just need to tighten it further?)

Also, when i was inspecting this i also noticed that my rubber hoses look very warn going into the fuel plastic filter as well as the cigar hose. I am replacing the cigar hose but i am not sure which type of rubber hose i need to order to replace the hose that leads to the plastic filter.

These are the one's i am looking at. (which should i get?)

THanks!

Why don't we order out parts from this site? This forum doesn't allow outside links...

Pelican Parts - 1983 Mercedes-Benz 240D Base Sedan Parts and Accessories

Before you replaced the primer pump, did you take the old crush washer out of the top of the pump before you installed the new one on top? Usually it is really grease and you can't see the old one...

A member did some nice guides for replacing stuff and maintenance..

Also need to get the area that the washer seats on as clean as possible.

Those washers are really single use, but it may be OK to re-use. I never had any luck re-using or finding the exact right size replacement washer. Always leaked even with new pump. Tried a sealant, but hard to get the oil off everything, so still leaked

Bought a couple of Bosch pumps from a truck parts place in Fla (off eBay) for about $10.0 each. Well, at least they say Bosch on the pump and box Working fine.

For the Plastic Fuel Filter 5/16" inside diameter fuel hose you can get from a normal auto part store works; that is what is on mine. Some say you may need to replace the clamps as the clamps stock clamps do not expand over the 5/16" Hose.

Someone had already changed the clamps on mine to they typical worm gear type clamps so I did not have to change them.

There is no replacement for the Cigar Hose except that some have used regular fuel hose their also. The hose is heavy because pulsation can cause the hose to move around and sometimes it the hose hits stuff and makes noise.

I used normal generic fuel line and it didn't agree with the biodiesel in our B5 mandated fuel. Stepped up to Gates Barricade with no issues. Something to be aware of if your state does the same.

Edit: I've also gone ~14k miles without a cigar hose. No issues.

Fuel Injection Hose sold at the normal Auto parts store is lined with Viton.

Fuel Injection Hose SAE J30R9 or 30R90 SAE 30R9-- The GoodYear Hose is suposed to have a blue lining and the similar Gates hose is supposed to have a brown lining.

SAE 30R7 is the Regular Fuel Hose.

The bio-diesel forum has much discussion on hoses. I don't run that but usually fill up with the new Diesel HPR which is bio-based but chemically converted to be compatible w/ diesel. Still, I had a weeping hose so installed Gates Barricade hose from NAPA. It has "bio-diesel compatible" printed right on it.

One bio guy uses PEX plastic tubing, which resists even more chemicals, but a bit harder to plumb since stiffer than hose. Home Depot carries the tube, but not the smaller crimps (3/16"OD recall), so I had to buy on ebay, but had the Gates hose before those arrived, so never tried.
