1972 220D Rear Calipers

I purchased rebuild rear calipers for my 72 220D. The problem is they are different than what is on the car. As you can see from the pictures, the original caliper has the line fitting near the top of the caliper, the new one has it angled off the center. Slightly different shapes too. Both are ATE calipers. Does anyone recognize either one as OEM on a 72 220D?

My parts car had one of each style installed and my spare parts book from 1973 lists over a dozen part numbers for the rear brake caliper so it seems they made many changes.

Maybe return the parts you purchased and take a stab at rebuilding the original calipers?

If you use them I suggest consider buying new hoses since the new position will crack an old line if the rubber is brittle.

I recently read that there was a change to the W123 calipers for the W115 chassis. Is anyone aware of this? The OEM rear brake design uses a "U" shaped hard pipe coming from the caliper and that is connected to the rubber line. Are the OEM rebuilt calipers available?

I don't understand your meaning in the first sentence. Since the 115 came before the 123 it would seem that the opposite must be the case. In any case in my experience the 115 and the 123 rear calipers are the same excepting on a 123 wagon they are slightly bigger bore for the extra weight. They are interchangible though and the pads are the same as on a sedan.

I think he means that once the W115 design "ran out" the W123 design was introduced.

If this is the case I would suspect this to be a pretty likely as the rear suspension design on the W114/5 is the same as the W123.
