w116 300sd 15" Steel Rims

I own a 1979 300sd that drives with 14" bundts and 215 70 14 Tires.

I recently contemplated in purchasing 15" bundts by Fuchs from the Classic Center, but the hefty $500.00 per rim made me think twice.
Oh yeah, the bundts are on sale.

And so now I'm considering 15" steel rims with Mercedes Hub Caps.

What are the things to look at and pay attention to?

What is the rim width or dimensions that Im looking for to get the best possible tire on the rim?

What is the best tire size to use with the 15 inch steel rim?
Does using a lower profile (65 or 60) compromise the handling or drive?

Are there differences between steel rims? Are some lighter in weight than others?

Am I using the correct term when I use the words "steel rim" or is there an alternative rim that is composed of a different metal that is lighter and performs well.

There are so many more tire options using the 15 inch rims.

Advice greatly appreciated

I have never found 15" steelies for my 116.
i did find a used sett of Ronal rims and BBS in 16" rims.

So if you can't find what you are looking for, this may be an option for you.

The simplest solution is to use 15" alloys from a 126 or 107, 1986 and later.
I have some. Of the four this is the one that has a scuffed/darkened area.

15" steelies are rare in the US. I think some 202s had the option but there's too much offset to properly fit a 116. The 15" steelies off a factory LWB 123 will look skinny on a 116 but should do the job -

x2 getting a set of 15" alloys from an 86-91 126 or 107 which look the same as 124 alloys but have different offset.

Well I was hoping to keep the hub cap look or the bundt rim look on the car.

I have a
w108 with 14 inch steel wheels (195 75 14 tires) and a
w126 with 15" alloys (205 65 15 tires).

I wonder if my w108 rims with tires fit my w116 300sd.
Tires would be too narrow but the original tires were 14" 185's on these diesels.

I guess I will have to forget about the 15"s.

Anyone know how the 15" ATS Baroque Bundts look on a w116?

I saw a 6.3 with 86-91 126 wheels with modifiers and painted to look like hubcaps. It looked pretty sharp compared a 109 with out-of-the-box flat face wheels.

Picture this with the middle section in body color -

Here's half of what you need and not far from you - Mercedes Benz 15 in Arc Alurad Mag Wheel | eBay

If you find a set of 15" steelies, where would you find an even rarer set of 15" '70s hubcaps?

Thanks for the link.

I guess I will have to wait until I find a good set of 15 inch bundts.

I was wondering if I could go from a current 215 75 14 Tire to a 215 70 14 Tire?

Can I use a lower (70) profile tire on my 14 inch bundt without compromising steering and handling?

i have looked into the same 15"+hubcap concept. i bet either a chrome or a matte black 15" steel wheel with a chrome 14" hubcap could look fine. VW uses the same 5x112 pattern so there are plenty of options to choose from if you are willing to drill out the centerbore. not sure which ones have favorable geometry, though. it seems to me that the hubcaps would be ziptied on from the rear. still interested in this idea.
