Anyone in Indiana want to check an engine for me?

I'm in need of a 617 long block for my wagon. It's been rough trying to find a engine that will fit my budget and isn't high mileage.

I found a guy in Indiana (English) that's got a 140k engine for sale. He said he'd "test" it for me, but doesn't want to run a compression test. Is there anyone nearby that can go listen to it run or see if it's worth me driving out there to get it?

The approximate area of Indiana posted might help. You are right to be very careful still you would also not like to miss the real deal either.

Sorry I thought the English was an indication of his native language.

Its about 3.5 hours from Lafayette one way. I'd do it for fuel and a little something for my time.

Tom was who I was thinking of. That's the reason for my really stupid request for location. I had hoped it would have been closer to him.

I would use Tom if the need was there and he was willing. He has been around the block and around the bend enough times to make good decisions.

I assume the potential buyer has more information than posted. My other thought was that if the poster could get the vin number of the vehicle the engine was in or is still in. I might risk running it on carfax.

Sometimes they have accumulated milage and sometimes not reported. It could also have been a rebuilt replacement but a paper trail would be needed.

Depending on the sellers knowledge level on these old diesel Mercedes. For example the odometers are frequently all wrong. One of these at that milage would be unlikely to be parted out unless rust got the better of it or it was in an accident.

No compression test allowed or given. Someone has to see the car. Or something that substantiates the claim of 145K. Usually these lower mile engines are stumbled upon by accident.

Honest people are out there of course. They are just not falling out of the trees when it comes to selling cars or car parts.

Did he say that someone looking at if for you could not do a compression test ?
Suspicious if he will not allow someone else to do it.... it is the primary test for the engine's condition....

No, he just didn't want to do it. He told me the starter had been removed. So even after he pulls it from the car this week there's a bit to do before a compression test could be done.

I think he's just trying to get it off his hands without any effort. I don't blame him, but I'm thinking of driving 1200 miles round trip to get it so I don't want to show up to a rusty mess.

I might take Tom up on is offer, but I'm cheap and I don't want to screw him over either.

Are you sure the head has an SLS pump or at least a PTO for an SLS pump?

I'm in need of a long block (everything besides the head), I already have a decent head.
