something loose in torque converter

I haven't had a torque converter in my hands in a while. Just this morning, I pulled the torque converter from the stripped splines tranny I'm replacing. Holding it horizontally and looking into the vanes, I moved it briskly side to side and saw the insides moving independently of the case. Is this normal?

Do they turn with the messed up spline shaft ?
One side should be attached to one side of the torque converter.. the other to the output shaft...

Both of the ones in my shop do the same thing

Thanks! Looks like everything inside the tranny is good. Just the darn stripped or worn out splines in the output shaft.

The impeller is attached to the case and bolted to the flywheel. The turbine is splined to the input shaft And rotates freely inside the torque converter case. So when the car is stopped, the case and impeller spin and the turbine is held stationary by the trans.
