om617 rack damper bolt
noticed my rack damper bolt is oily. not sure if its a leak at the bolt or surroundings.
looking at the location of the bolt, it seems like theres not enough room to back it out without hitting the oil filter housing. or is that not the case? any tips on replacing the rack damper would be appreciated. not trying to fix any issues except replacing old wear items. valves have been adjusted, chain is ok, oil changes, filters etc, all addressed. thx |

It comes out easy. If I recall, the jam nut is a 14 mm box wrench. I think it does go into an area w/ oil. I coat the threads w/ "gasket sealant", which stays pliable. It is a gummy purple liquid that cleans up w/ ethanol. The later ones (1985, gold?) are said to be better (stiffer), though swapping or adjusting the damper never seemed to make a difference for me.

Yes, comes out fine.
It has an "O" ring, this is supposed to prevent oil leakage. The original ones were a square "O" ring, as opposed to what is normally found rubber.

I used a round cross section O-ring on mine with no issues. I removed and reistalled arack damper bolt years ago and there is room to remove it.
As was mentioned a littl Oil may come out after you remove it so put somethhing under it to absorb the Oil. Find instructions on adjustment in the DIY Section. Repair Links Fast navigation Fast navigation Do It Yourself Links
