Swap Question Im sure its been discussed

I asked in the Tech forum but they suggest I ask over here. I searched but came up dry. I just bought a very very nice 1977 240d 4 Speed. It needs an engine however. I found an 1981 240d 4 speed and am wondering if this is a plug and play swap? I will buy the 81 if it is. Wikipedia says the horsepower is different however im unsure if thats just an internal adjustment or if its a completely different engine altogether. So please mercedes gods tell me if I can or cannot do this easily.

Only issue is the glow plug controller. Easy to connect.

You can likely recoup your purchase price selling the trans and pedals to someone on the forum wanting a 4 speed swap...

you may have issues with the power steering unit and the ac unit. The later models had the ac down low and the early had the Frankenstein bracket up top on the passenger side. The frame may be different to clear them.

If you pull both and compare and transfer brackets as required, you should be cool.

The 81 would use the radial 4 gm compressor, more efficient, but highly problematic... The hoses will swap onto the modern R4 if you choose to keep it... The alternator mount is better also...

What I mean is if you unhook the hoses from the condenser and evaporator, they should connect to the hoses on the 81 engine... Once you see it you will understand.

Ok so basically I can Frankenstein one car by having both by swapping items as needed. Shouldn't be hard them If I have the whole car. As long as the bell housting and trans fit in happy. Don't want to be dealing with all that as well.

The 77 and 81 are both W123 bodies, so there is no difference there.
The 81 eng/trans will drop right in and bolt up the same as the 77.

If the 81 has the all one piece transmission case, then use the shift rods for that trans.
The iron Box trans and one piece Aluminum Case shift rods are inter changeable.
The transmissions will fit either engine, no bell housing issues.

As mentioned the 77 has the York compressor on top right of the engine.
The 81 has the AC compressor on the lower left on the engine.

The 81 has 5 hp more as I remember. & the up graded Pencil GP`s.

I think the linkage to the IP are different between the two also.

The GP Relay for the 77 is under the dash and the Fuse is on the Fire Wall.

The 81 Relay and Fuse in on the L/F inner fender.
There may be a small wiring issue there.

What is wrong with the 81`s body?

actually i dont know how the body is on the 81. I havent even seen it. The ad says runs and drives pretty solid as its been in the south for half of its life. So who knows maybe the 81 isnt that bad. But it cant be as nice as the 77.

Charlie, Good List....
The absence of that monstrosity of a framework and the heavy power sucking vibrating York compressor which it holds will be a welcome improvement.

If you will go ahead and get the other car.. it will be much easier for people to describe what needs to be done to match up the two systems....

Where are you located? I might know someone who would want the leftover 4speed&bits when you're done.

There use to a guy on E-bay that offered a bracket to install a Sanden Compressor
on the York bracket mount. Made it more efficient.

Get rid of the York and Bracket, you might pick up 10hp and extra acceleration. LOL.
