To replace the starter in a /8 220D, you must pull the engine/transmission?

Just saw a guy claiming this in a craigslist ad. It sounds ridiculous to me. I assume that he is wrong?

I am sure they did not make it so the engine and trans had to be pulled to replace the starter....
It may be a real hassle... some cars require removing considerable steering components to replace it.... and to have the wheels turned in the proper direction....

For once, I know something that Greg doesn't. Whoohooooooooo! The w114/w115 series cars were released in 1968 and were considered a major new design change. To refer to the new design, the series became known by their year of introduction, that is, by Stroke 8 or Strich Acht or /8.

I have read it is tricky to get to the starter bolts, but I have never read you have to drop the engine or tranny. Here is a thread which mentions some of the challenges and solutions:

I once had a 1973 220D. My mechanic removed the starter in his back yard and never complained about it being difficult.

I changed a starter on the 220D (72) I resold, and it was slow going but certainly not impossible.

Took me a whole Saturday, but I combined that with engine steam cleaning and removing old exhaust parts, so 8 hrs is not a fair assessment of how long it took.

But don't start at ten and make a lunch date at noon!

The starters in the 220 D's are not too difficult to replace -- just a couple bolts on the transmission's bell-housing if I remember right.

One of them can be a bit tricky to get off though--one can only get a small swing on it with a wrench. Grinding a combination wrench to have a thinner profile can make the job easier.

There is also a brace on the front of the starter which is tough to reach.
