Okay, I'll give you the scoop on finding a wife who likes the smell of diesel.

When she was a little kid, her Dad would come home from work as an airplane mechanic spelling like jet fuel. She remembers the smell and is not unlike comfort food. Also, she has always been willing to be out there in the garage handing me tools and working under the car. I remember when I rebuilt her 2002, she cleaned all the parts and scraped all the gasket material of the parts for me. She does complain when I leave little black spots on my pillow case from those tiny little grease and dirt balls that miss you eye and drops either into your mouth or in your hair.

I might even let her read this thread and let her answer.

Henry

"Woman" and "save me a bundle" should never appear in the same sentence.

Ruined shoes

Last week I spilled diesel fuel on a very expensive pair of shoes. The fuel soaked right in and the shoes will not take polish. They are shot!

OK,,, for leather,,,,, get some saddle soap... the one in a can that is in paste form.... not the spray on with the glycerin in it...
Take a small round brush with medium stiff bristles and densely packed head and a handle and with the shoe laces out of the shoes.. and them off your feet.... use small circular motion with dabs of the saddle soap to cause foam to form... then wipe the foam off with a clean cloth or paper towel... repeat the process..... as many times as you need to to get where you can not smell an diesel on the rag you use to evacuate the foam.
Many people use saddle soap like one would use Lexol.... to condition the leather.... I do not recommend this... use saddle soap to clean, then use something else to condition... FYI... ' condition' is another way of saying....replace the oils which the animal would have provided if it were still attached to the skin. Your body does this as evidenced by you leaving finger prints all over the world.... Drying is the kiss of death for leather...Lanolin is the usual oil to keep leather from drying out... it is from sheep... You have seen it included in most hand lotions you use....Greg

A mix of Lexol and Mothers Lanolin leather treatment is a great thing.

If the shoes got good and soaked it is nearly impossible to get them totally clean. Once the fibers are saturated, you have to soap/rinse/dry at least a few times. If you are attempting to keep them as dress shoes - won't happen. Quickest cleaning will probably be solvent (acetone or some such) rinse. This really distresses the leather but chases the fuel oil out. Restoring it with the best oils will leave you with soft leather shoes that are perfect for walking the dog (won't matter too much if dog piles get mooshed into the soles).

PS

stitching will let go from all the chemicals long before leather fails.

There are many parts of shoes which are only glued together.... using enough solvent to get the Diesel out may dis assemble your shoes by accident... My first suggestions were the kindest/gentlest I know of given how bad a situation this is.... You should be able to put the entire shoe in water and saddle soap it inside and out... dry it reasonably fast,,,so mildew does not happen.... then get some oils back into it as soon as it is dry... and a couple of applications of the lexol, etc would not be unusual .... inside and out....
Most people don't realize that the stitching around the edge of the soles is mainly for looks... when you wear through it from the bottom your soles don't fall off... they are put on with great contact cement...so the acetone or solvent rinse is a last resort on this deal... Greg
