I am not upset at all ... his car... free country....
Did he answer the question about ' wanting a project' or ' a running car' ? He asked for an opinion about which engine.... and you answer ' both'.... ? I am going with VStech's opinion.....

He didnt specify what his exact plans were and asked for opinions. We better call a full council meeting and check with the justice department as to whether "both" can be an opinion or a crime against humanity. Since you need "both" spelled out- If both engines are cheap enough, he can purchase both, get the car running with the 617, and plan out a future 603 swap. As i said, one is plug and play and he can fire it in. Secondly, since so many swaps have been documented hes not flying into a 603 swap blind. Do you understand? Have we talked this out enough? Yeesh

A lot of W123s were built with inline 6s, I wouldn't be worried about packaging.

Even year to year ... changing out same engines or trans.... can involve a lot of extra unforeseen problems.... little in some ways.... but a real time sink... things like brackets... hose lengths, hose routing...electrical connections...
I see the voice of reason and practicality being reflected in the poll.... good work guys....

I recommend people read Rollguy's Sanden AC bracket thread.... these things are often way harder than one would imagine going into it.... Better they are warned up front to do as much research as possible before getting money or time invested.

Having the parts in hand and even a parts car to work with will give you plenty of test space for custom brackets and whatnot. Personally i would want a manual transmission with my 603

Tough? Yup... Doable? With skill money and patience, sure... Would I want one with a 603 in it? Maybe. A2.88 diff wouldn't be enough of a climb for the 603 it needs a 2.65 or even a 2.47 to get great economy.
Put it pushing a 3.07 or 2.88 and I doubt much economy would be noticed... Lucky if you hit 28 mpg.

Maybe. The motor certainly has more power, but I doubt efficiency would change, possibly decline with the added fuel burned making the power.
And we aren't talking a ton more power here... I think it's around 20 hp stronger.

I was going to ask that..... thanks....
A mismatch of ratios , either just the third member, or in conjunction with the ratios in the transmission could easily negate that 20 hp in terms of driveability. MB had all the money they needed to R and D things like that... and for the most part did an amazing job making these cars do what they expected them to.

Many people who have done swaps ... even the same engine and year to a matching car swear by having them relatively close together and pointed the same direction.... Making proper brackets is not easy.... those which will do the job and not break due to vibration.... witness the air cleaner bracket on some of our cars...
