w210 webasto information needed

SO I was replacing the thermostat on my E290 wagon the other day and I had taken the belly pans off. Much to my surprise when I was under the car I found what would appear to be a factory installed webasto unit! Very cool. Now, my car has no controls whatsoever for it on the inside of the cabin so I'm assuming that it must have the remote (telestart) system. Sadly my car didn't come with the remote for it. So two questions:

1: Where would I find the telestart module to confirm that my car has one?

2: Is there a way to manually test the unit to see if it works before I invest in a remote?

You need a friend in northern Europe who is familiar with this Webasto stuff - I would guess those folks are few and far between in Canada, and non-existent here in the US. I would kill for one of those Webasto heaters you can put on a timer and warm your car up in the cold winter mornings before you hop in. Retrofitting is hugely expensive. I hope you get it working!

Yeah, I was rather hoping someone on here might have one.... We do get the odd member from Europe.

Aren't there wires to follow to a controller?

Call webasto and ask their tech support how to test it.

I've delved into wis and it seems that the remote control unit (if I have one) will be mounted behind my ashtray. I'm going to pull it out this weekend and see if the unit is there, or if there are any wires for it.

From what I can tell I should have the digital timer unit there as well. I'm wondering if someone rep, aced the ash tray with one that didn't have the controls and just buried the wires behind it...

Another thing to consider if you can't get thing going using OE parts.

Some transit busses have diesel fired heaters for the engine and interior. You should be able to use a wiring diagram from one of them to get it going.

I do know from gasoline fired heaters ( Air cooled VW ) that the combustion blower must be turned on first then fuel. When shutting off, the fuel must be cut off then the blower run for a minute or so to clear the chamber. There is also a sequence of spark to get the flame going.

Interesting. That makes sense. I'm assuming that all the control circuitry is there, just no the switch. From what I can tell there were some base models that just used a 3 position rocker switch. Off, automatic, and on. So worse comes to worse I figure I should be able to wire that up... First step though, see whats behind the ash tray.

The plot thickens.....

So I pulled out the centre switch trim, the ash tray, and the storage compartment, and there is no sign that there was ever any other wiring switches, or controls in there.

While I was outside, I also popped open the fuse box, and low and behold, my car does have the fuse for the aux heater installed and it is getting power.... so I'm a little stumped at this point.... how the hell does this thing work!?!?!?!?!

After some reading on WIS and combing through some google translated Russian sites I discovered that some of these were wired to turn on when the outside temperature reaches 5*C or below and are wired into the outside temperature sensor.

Armed with this info I marched back outside, and unplugged the temp sensor and started the car. Low and behold the Webasto fired up! It seemed to cycle a couple times, fired up, then off, then on again... I'll have to do some more reading but now were getting somewhere... I'd like to see if I can retrofit in a timer or a manual control button as I'd like to use it well before 5*C....

I now picture you as the Canadian Mountie version of James Bond using a Minox camera and a Wollensak tape recorder deep in mother Russia.. . . .

When the heater fired up, did heat come out of the exhaust? If so, it is likely the flame sensor is dirty and not seeing the flame operate. ( If this follows home heating burner convention )
