Same here. Bottom line, it didn't. I think he may be an aspiring news writer putting in embellishments.

If that did happen he must have felt pretty crappy afterwards since it could have been easily prevented with well placed towels and plywood. Good that one didn't hit him in the eye.

I have used WD40 sprayed out of a warm can (room temp) and the kerosene in the mix does help.

I would not go the starting fluid route.

Plus, the block heater and warm oil of the right viscosity will start a diesel at -4 F, like it did for me last winter w/o anything else special, just std routine.

Hmm...
My 87 TD STARTED easily with three cylinders dead... ip not sending fuel to three cylinders. Pulled injection lines off, and it easily kept idling. Possibly was running on oil though... I didn't try starting it with the injectors out... Maybe I should...

Too funny, funola. I must not have enuf compression to blow out the gglow plugs. Yes. On Monday , hooked up the gplug wires, lost two nuts in the engine compartment. Used some alligator clips to hold the wires to the go plugs. Vroom. Yay. Drove to work all happy in the merc.. Got to buy some little nuts someday. Probably won't. Even the glow plug light in the dash came on this evening. Never saw that work before. Mike

The WD-40 works pretty good 'cause what is actually happening is the propane (used as propellant in the can) ignites at a lower temp than diesel. A small propane torch would work just as well. (un-lit, duh).

Ether starting fluid is can cause MAJOR damage, with even one glow plug working. Soon as it hits a red-hot plug, it explodes, it has bent rods and more.

Propane is to diesels like nitro-methane is to gassers.
