If you think I didn't give people factory quotes, you're sorely mistaken. People only see $$$ and they go cheap. Hence my point: Garbage is FALSE ECONOMY. Stop suggesting that people use garbage parts or do dangerous I'll advised procedures. You are not helping anyone.

Your statement about testing every part is just proof positive that you've never worked in the industry and have no idea where I'm coming from. If you only knew how busy I as the technician was and how busy they as the commercial parts techs were, you'd know why that statement is so silly... Flat rate Jason, flat rate.

Like I said, glad you are a success story. Buy a lottery ticket for the AZ pick 3.

I would think the extra cost of a quality rebuilt starter must outweigh the time and trouble it takes to R&R the starter. Unless you have a growler there is no way to properly test the armature. Spend the few extra dollars and take it to a reputable shop for a rebuild.

Behave guys.

I'm of the opinion remains are not as reliable as new, or pro rebuilds, but ya buys what ya buys, and deals with the results.

I will probably just reassemble the starter and use it as a core for a remanufactured bosch starter. The rebuilders will be using the cheapest parts they can get so im not going that route.

The c clip is under the thrust washer. Tap the thrust washer with a 12 mm deep socket to expose the c clip.

You already have it off the car, and disassembled. Just clean it up and replace a few parts yourself. Call up a starter rebuild shop and ask them if they have brushes for it. If not you can probably get them online. New brushes, smooth out the commutator and clean it up, and clean/regrease the bearings. Clean up the solenoid and perhaps replace contacts if you can.

I'm telling you man, the "rebuild" is not quality. They use cheap parts if they need to replace something, and most just get cleaned up and painted anyway. It's better if you do that yourself on your OE starter which you know is quality.

In the end, you do what you gotta do. I just don't recommend reman starting or charging parts. DIY refurb of original parts is much better.

No problem getting the brushes and solenoid switch. Its the pinion gear that is hard to find. Mercedes has them for too much money. Im not inclined to import it from euro yet.

In your position, I'd probably go to a junkyard and pick up a starter or even disassemble the starter in the yard and buy just the part that I need. Usually my junkyard will give me one very small piece for free if that's all I went there for.
