Found a car. Thoughts?

Mercedes Benz I was looking at this. I have a 1984 300d with a dead transmission. Would this make a possible donor and is it a turbo? It has been to long since I looked at the text on the back but I seem to recall the text on the right saying turbo if it was longer but I can't recall for sure.

Looks like like a turbo, based on the RH side of the trunk lid. You could look up years for the turbo in the US, and see if 82 is included.

1982-1985 US 300Ds are all Turbos. There is a mix in '81, and everything before that is NA.

You can't tell much with the car not running or from the pics and description. I'd but it if it had what I need and it was near salvage value. I'd also consider repairing and driving depending on condition when I went to look. Takc cash & lead with the Ben Franklins if nice.

X2 and a little trouble shooting is easier than swapping. Stopped running could be simple fuel filters, glow plugs, air filter.

Maybe for disenchanted VW owners looking to spend their $500?

A good price. I paid $400 for my 1984, which had frame issues (crash repair), intending to use its engine to fix my 1985. But I repaired the problems and drive it today, plus found a great engine for my 1985. Since it turns over but doesn't run, it might be hard to check for blow-by. You could test compression pressure, but that is not trivial. Tranny could be the same condition as yours. Tranny rebuild kits cost ~$300, which greatly limits options. A 1985 might be better, for its later transmission and rear-end, which gives a taller highway gear. My 1984 buzzes >3000 rpm at 65 mph, which gets annoying. It always seems like there should be another shift.

Beware of new cars which require full comprehensive insurance, the loan will cost interest, the electronic stuff may not be able to be fixed and likely come with Safety Recalls Already applying to them....

You borrow to buy cars? I know that I can afford it if I have the ability to write a check. I know that I want it if I'm willing to write a check.

I had to look in the VW Owner's Manual to figure out how to turn the tire pressure light off. This may be my last modern car - if I can get the old stuff the way I want them.
