disappearing transmission fluid

I have a 83 300sd with 356000 miles just recently I seem to be losing ATF.No drips,or spray under car.No atf coming thru modulator,no atf in radiator. This will be 5 quarts added in 3 weeks. Any thoughts?

.

plugged filter no proper oil supply to moving parts
increase of temp and lower oil amounts equals oil burn.... perhaps?

did you felt any smell on stick during adding the oil?

no smell of burnt,I use a semi syntheic fluid and change regually.Car is driven only 10 miles 4 days a week.Dipstick always low,I will check radiator lines, maybe a blockage but trans would have spit out fluid.I have never had to add fluid in the 12 years I've owned it.

Failure in vacuum modulator. Fluid is being sucked into vacuum pump and thence into the engine. Check dipstick, is engine oil high?

found it,its somewhere in the area where the steel line is braced to the engine.Maybe chaffed there for so long. I will cut line, and use a hose between the break. My son is supposed to buy a car in Dec for college.I will junk car after,as interior shot, nasty fuel tank, sub mounts gone in front,,and jack holes rusted in front. Been a good one though.

My mother's 70's Lincoln ( gas ) had that problem.. but with no vacuum pump it was being burned by the engine...but not enough to show as smoke... frustrating to find some things back before the internet.

Interesting. I wonder why no drips or other evidence of an external leak? Perhaps the fluid flow / pressure in the line to the transmission cooler is too low at idle to cause the leak to show up? So it only leaks at speed? We need a transmission person to offer an opinion!

Carpe, thank you.

Leathermang, how did we get anything done before the 'net?

How are you checking the fluid level?

Improper checking of the fluid, can lead to the trans always seeming low or empty....

It does not move when low,as for drips.I was looking at bell housing, and rear of trans. My front tie rod on the drivers side was soaked.I new I was leaking diesel from the big filter bolt.So I stuck my finger on tie rod and it was red.Steering is perfect with new hoses. So it was not it. I'll just add two quarts a week for the next three weeks of college.winter is here, and I can't stand being out doors.

It was HARD.... sometimes Impossible.... because TSB's ( Technical Service Bulletins ) which the factory sent to the dealers to warn of problems and how to fix them... were kept secret by those dealers....
If it was not in the car's FSM, Motor's Manuals, Chiltons, Petersen publishing books, Hot Rod magazine , etc... you needed an old mechanic friend or luck.
