Diesel Timing Chain Master Link
 

Hi Sirs-
The classic center sent me a master link for the timing chain. My engine is a 1958 om621 diesel. It has two little "c" clips and a grove in the pins to fasten it together. Is this OK? I've seen examples of the master link being peened together. Is this better? Thanks Angus

I am assuming you have a double roller chain...?
That design means there is very little side pressure on the pins... so not much is required to hold the pins in place...
ONE important thing to watch.... circlips must be installed in the correct direction with regards to movement of the chain.... follow instructions which came with the chain.

I'll go forward with the circlips. Got another question-
I'm putting a reworked engine back together.
I have to align everything to install the timing chain.
I have the engine crank set at 45 deg BTDC with the cyl 1 in compression stroke.
I have the fuel injection set at begin feed--the pump shaft mark and the mark on the injection pump line up.
I have to set the cam shaft by aligning the top sprocket mark with the mark on the front housing.
Then I can install the timing chain.
Does this sound correct? OK thanks

I only have FSM 's for 615,616,617na,617 turbo.... MB is different from all the old American engines I had experience with when I arrived at this forum... I made some mistakes assuming things before I got my FSM's....
You have a really really old engine... so I suggest you look for a FSM for it.. and/or some old mechanic who can guide you on this procedure.
If you are putting this engine together from the bare ground up.. IF you wanted to you might could install a chain with NO master link... as our engines are assembled at the factory.
My opinion is that would be slightly OCD... but I am not against ' OCD' in search of long lasting reliability.

I think you should start a NEW thread with a catchy title .... directly pointed at this problem...
might attract the person with the information you need .....
