I'll have to look if I have any in-progress shots. I used straight rod along the sides and then bend some to go around the corners. I pretty much welded the whole thing, but my first coat of filler was fiberglass jelly just in case.

I still haven't figured out what to do about the headliner, but I did install some of that foil-lined insulation in the roof to cut down noise and especially heat from the sun.

I have a little bit newer Audi that I bought for parts and the previous owner just stitched the old roof in with a stick welder and then sealed it with bathroom silicone. So that's another way to go.

Can you tell me where to find the drains on a 1985 300TD (wagon)? I have had the sunroof completely out and still cannot find where the drains originate. Am I blind?

Thanks, I looked all over the internet for another 123 who did this but couldn't find any. A few other types of cars did it your method and said it is a better way in order to match the curvature, It took me around 10 thin coats of epoxy w filler to finally match and I was only 1/16 inch low on one corner.

No such thing has a FREE sunroof The ones I have came with the cars and both have cost me $$$.

On the E320, the mechanism failed. MBs solution was a complete cassette - $$$$. Luckily I was able to repair it.

On both E320 and 300D, problem has been rust around the edges of the opening. Again $$$ to repair and paint entire top.

I was planning on using clear 3M tape over the edge gaps, at least on 300D. Got a price from 3M dealer that was quite reasonable, but somehow never got around to doing it. Car doesn't see salt these days, but no doubt sunroof opening will rust again in time.

There are four drains, two in the front of the pan that comes down the a pillar and two in the rear of the pan that come down the pillar by the rear hatch. You can sort of see the ones in the front corners, when looking threw the sun roof but the rear can't be seen unless the head liner is removed...or the pan...

Looks much slicker w/o the sunroof. My wife fusses if I open it even a crack (hair!). Sunroofs seem like an 80's must-have thing, like the later CD changers. I would trade it all for a few good cup-holders (dang Germans).

I think the drains are metal tubes. If plastic or rubber, they probably would be long gone, plus a snake might destroy them. I use a stiff wire (re-bar) to dislodge the main chunks, then blow air thru, and never had a backup.

Awesome, I personally hate sun/moon roofs. They are nothing but trouble and I NEVER use them in any of my cars. If I repaint my E300 this is the first thing I'm doing.

I've been trying to work with a dealer to custom order a brand new 4runner limited without the sunroof, they all look at me strange or give the "well you can just close the shade...now how about this one? We can get you in it today!" BS. I know for a fact they can do it, but most aren't willing to do any extra work and want to sell you what's there on the lot RIGHT NOW, but the non-limited models do come without roofs.

They leak, creak, rattle, stick, and motors die or get off-track; they are just an PITA.

Yes to all, plus added weight in the top of the car which is the last place you want it. IMO either a full, fixed roof or no roof at all are the things to have, depending on the weather. Anything else is a "worst of both worlds" solution. And if you're going with the no roof option, it's best to ditch two wheels and a whole lot of weight. Hence the Street Triple in my sig.

A few 123`s came with a manual SR. Saw a few in PNP, don`t remember if they were Euro`s or not.

All Wagons came with a manual SR. I pulled one whole assembly out of a wagon
in PNP with the thought of installing it into our 85 300D.
Still thinking about it.

The drains on all 123 sedans drain at the windshield post "A" pillar
and the "C" pillar.
The wagons "A" pillar and at the rear on the "D" pillar. think the wagon has one more pillar?

The drain hose is a pretty tough piece of tubing from what I got out of that wagon in PNP.
No sign of rot.

I love them too. Which sucks because the one in my Sportline is broken. I have all the parts to fix it just haven't had the time to pull them from my parts car.

I think the manual ones are the best. The one in the 77 240D we have is awesome. We swapped that engine into my dad's 83 body to use the manual transmission and trunk since the trunk was smashed on the 77. 83 has no sunroof and my dad complains about it all of the time. My brother's 300SD didn't come with one (it was not an option in 1980 because of needing to save weight for CAFE regulations) but his 79 parts car has one and he has been thinking of swapping it over, which would be going the other way of the person in this thread.

The sunroofs don't seem to have many problems if you maintain them, which is often a symptom of how the car is maintained overall. My Sportline was treated like trash by the PO who didn't know any better for replacing parts with crappy URO bits and all. It didn't surprise me at all that when I got to looking around and found that the sunroof had broken extension arms on one side and the interior panel was ziptied in place.
